1)I don't like media players (to big, to slow, to....), so I use the PLAY command for playing mp3's on my PC. It does just what I want it to do: playing music, nothing more, nothing less. I also have a huge folder where all my audio files are. Is there a way to let the PLAY command select different songs, and play randomly?
If not, are there possible external players that can be "programmed" to do this?
2)On the Amiga (those where the days... ) I had a button (buttonbanks downloaded from the internet) to play the intro's from the audiofiles. A selection of songs played (for instance) 10 seconds.
Is this possible?
Hey there... I don't think there's any way to do what you're looking to do. The built-in audio player is real simplistic. Though it seems to 'queue' up files you've selected before you run 'Play' so that if you hit 'Next' it goes to the next 'selected' file, it doesn't seem to even move to the next file 'on it's own' after one finishes playing.
I've been building up a collection of half started projects. I've sworn to finish ONE and that is a Monkey's Audio plugin to read APE tag data into Opus columns. Afterwards, I "may" take it a step further and look into writing a slightly more capable 'audio playback' plugin, since I share your aversion to bloated media players.
In the meantime, I use foobar2000. It has the ability to take plugin/components to extend it's functionality... but at it's core it's a pretty simple and lightweight audio player.
In the meantime I have become addicted to 1by1 the directory player. A free and extremely tiny mp3 player. Its only 56 KB!!!! mpesch3.de/
When you run it on a single track or folder, it simply plays all the tracks in that folder and when done, moves onto the next folder for ever. Directory finder even plays whole drives. To change to a completely different folder, drive or tree, simply dragy the mp3 of interest onto 1by1. It will start on that track, then continue to play everying after it and everying in subfolders.
Sadly, there is no easy random, just the usual one. Like other apps, you need to load the files of interest first (which is precisely what we are trying to avoid here!), then randomise them, then play. Much better to have a player that starts at a certain folder and randomises everything in it or randomises everying in it and all subfolders.
It would be so good to do all this with DOPUS instead!! Imagine a lister that simply plays all the music in the list, random or in order, in one folder or all the subfolders. If Martin Pesch can get it done in 56 KB, why not some good aussie ingenuity....
