I've been running DirOpus for a number of years on my Windows XP Pro PC without any problems whatsoever. I'm currently running version 9.1.1.6.x dated 12/20/2008.
Last week I began to see the following message displayed whenever I attempted to open a file from within DirOpus:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
At the time I was logged on as a USER and not the ADMIN so I logged out, rebooted, and logged back in as the ADMIN. I launched DirOpus and attempted to open the same file and received the same message.
Okay, maybe the file is corrupt so I attempted to open another file, a JPG and received the same message.
I tried a number of things to resolve the issue including manually setting the permissions on a folder and the files, creating a new ADMIN account, and uninstalling DirOpus 9.1.1.5 and installing 9.1.1.6. Nothing has worked.
The real twist is that when I use Windows Explorer to open any of the files that failed under DirOpus, the file opens without any difficulty. I've tested this as both an ADMIN and a USER and the access issue is consistent and only occurs in DirOpus.
Has anyone encountered this or a problem similar to this?
The C: and F: are two physical hard disk drives using the NTFS file system. There is no compression or encryption enabled on either drive.
The file types range from TXT to TIF/JPG to DOC to EXE- virtually any data or application file type.
AVG anti-virus and Comodo Free Firewall have been disabled but that didn't resolve the problem.
Another interesting point is that as the ADMIN, I can perform application installs and uninstalls - as long as I don't launch the setup from with DirOpus. The USER account cannot install programs which is to be expected.
As mentioned in the original post, I created a new ADMIN account and disabled the original thinking that somehow the original ADMIN account or profile became corrupted.
I cannot isolate the problem to a specific event or application update. No new programs have been installed (or uninstalled) for at least a month. The only changes to the OS were the Windows Critical Updates.
Strange that the problem only occurs in DirOpus but I haven't changed any of the settings for weeks.
The problem was that somehow I enabled the "Offline Files" option under Windows Explorer. I just happen to stumble across this option in the "Folder Options" of Windows Explorer and noticed it was enabled.
I use offline file cache at work in conjunction with the Exchange server but how or why this setting on my home PC got enabled is a mystery.
