I believe it is necessary to number the tabs, what I mean is something similar to how Total Commander allows you to set a number in front of the tab names. I think this feature is quite important. For example, I often need to open a dozen tabs for work, and without labeling, it's hard to distinguish which shortcut key to press to jump to the tab I need. But if there were numbered tab labels, I could quickly use the shortcut keys.
Additionally, I've found that although we can set up shortcuts for quick tab switching through custom command buttons, this is not very user-friendly for beginners. Today, I recommended Directory Opus to my friend, and he complained about this issue, hoping that there could be a built-in tab jump button command to quickly set up shortcut keys.
I don't know if this is something that can be done one day in Opus, but I do have some workflows where I need to have 15+ tabs open (in which I sometimes go deeper in folder structure, to come back up sometimes).
To improve identification of tabs, I set up tab coloring based on path (and chose to apply sub-folders in my case).
I let you see if this could fit in your situation.
I am currently using your method, but I can clearly feel that this method is only temporary and can be better implemented. I think a sorting function switch like tc for the tab can be better implemented.
