Hello,
I see that there is a way to turn showing archives in the folder tree on and off in preferences, but does anyone know of a way to make this a button that can be put in a toolbar to toggle this setting on and off?

There isn't a command to toggle the option from outside of Preferences.
However, if you leave the option off, archives will still be added to the folder tree when you open them, so it does not stop you using the tree to browse archives, only to initially open them. That's often a good compromise.
It doesn't seem so, according to the online manual.
