Thank you both for your answers. I found a script that does exactly what I needed:

Tab-Labelizer - Extend the folder names shown in your tabs

I have improved the handling of library paths, my earlier attempt did not work very well. Using the FSUtil.DisplayName method helps. See post above for script.

I don't use Tab Groups, but they look very useful. I've still got a lot to learn here.
