Is it possible to show the number of items in a folder like Windows File Explorer allows?
If so, what setting should I use?

If you mean the current folder, the status bar under the file display tells you that by default.
The only way it wouldn't be there is if you had turned it off, or configured it not to show that information.
If you mean sub-folders, you can turn on a column for that. (But AFAIK File Explorer can't do that, so I assume you mean the current folder.)

By selecting a Folder then => Properties I can find out the number of elements contained in the folder.
This corresponds well to my expectations.

The same can be done in Opus, via the same Properties dialog.
You can also add a column which shows how many files and folders sub-dirs have within them, without having to open the Properties dialog every time.
