I was wondering if there is a way to automatically show the preview pane based on the folder content. Basically if a folder contains pictures I want the preview pane to automatically show up. I am currently controlling the display type ("Thumnails") via a defined Images folder-format but it seems you can't switch the preview on/off with that...
Any ideas?

There's no way to do that at the moment. Content Type detection can only change folder format (display mode, columns, sort order, etc.) but folder formats don't affect anything outside of the file display so they can't turn on the preview pane.
You could use a Style or hotkey to turn on the Viewer Pane quickly but I don't think there is any way to automate it based on folder content.
