is there a mechanism other than alpha blending to "lowlight" selected items in a pane that has not got the focus? Being able to choose any colour for unfocused selections would allow me to show where the focus is much better, since the blended colour is always too close to either the selection-bar colour or the white background.
No, only blending. You can set the amount of blending but I guess with some colour schemes it's not going to work so well. I chose my colours so that they were all very distinct.
Which colours to you use for background, selection background, and selection text? I am still trying to find some that work.
