Slow browsing with many subfolders

i noticed that when i enter a folder with many subfolders, that i haven't visited for some time, the tree updates very slow and opus reads a lot of data from the HDD.
it doesn't happen in folders i visit often even if they also have a lot of subfolders. however it slows my browsing down as i need to change folders frequently.
i tried searching in all of the options and even turning off content population for all folders, and still no change.

could this be caused by opus searching if the folders contain further subfolders to update the tree information and add the 'expand' sign?
if yes it would be nice to have an option to turn it off for faster browsing.
i use version 10.0.4 x64 on Win 7 x64

Try Preferences / Folder Tree / Options / No content population to see if that helps.

turning off content population only helps if i don't use the tree to change the folder,if the tree expands it's is still slow

How many folders are involved in this case?

Do you see similar problems in Windows Explorer when browsing a large directory that hasn't been opened in either program recently? (Opening it in one will likely cause the filesystem to cache the data in memory for the other, making both programs fast after the initial read.)

When the delay happens, is it just in the folder tree or is the whole window unresponsive until it's done?

As well as checking for sub-folders, there is potentially a check for custom folder icons, although (at least from memory) that would only happen if the folders were flagged with the R (read-only) attribute.

it's about 130 up to 220 subfolders
in windows explorer there's no such delay
when it happens, sometimes only the tree will be slowed down but the folders and files in the lister will appear normally, other times both are slowed down. the program doesn't freeze, the cursor will show the "loading" animation when i hover it over the tree.
i also have "show generic icons" option enabled for all folders.

Do you by chance have Size on disc (relative) horizontal bar chart for each folder showing up?

Reason I ask is I had noticed that it can take a LOOONG time to populate some trees especially if there are a lot of very large files in the tree. I used it for a few years but simply got tired of the wait. And yes, it does take a long time the first time after a bootup to read the folders with Size on disc (relative) turned on for all trees.

Suggest you turn it off. There are several ways to do this but I do it this way...
1: Set the right pain to Details.
2: Right-click on the Name bar at the top of the file list.
3: Select More.
4: On the right window double-click on the Size on disc (relative) statement.
5: Click on the Save button on the top right corner.
6: Select For this folder OR This folder and all sub folders.

That took care of the problem for me.

Cheers;

That's a good point. Anything like Size columns (if set to calculate for folders automatically), or columns which show counts of items below folders (which are always automatic if present in the window) will cause extra work for the filesystem when entering a folder with lots of subfolders.

i have the Size on disc (relative) column, but only for files, folder size calculation is off,
i also tried disabling the Attr column but it didn't help

how about an option to disable checking for sub-folders, and maybe another one for custom icons,it would speedup browsing in general, would you consider implementing it?
