Sort order

Where can I set the universal order for sorting the directories? Mine seems to constantly revert to order by size, and would juslike name, with a at the top.

Sounds like some of your Folder Formats have different sort orders set. Have a read through the FAQ linked in my signature.

I have done as you suggested and there are indeed some areas I am now more familiar with. Particularly Tools | File option where I can set all folders to a preferred setting.

But it does not work well for me yet. I will go from, say, the download window in Firefox to "open containing folder", and there they will all be sorted by size once again.

I wonder what I am missing? When I do the settings do they only aply to that one Lister? Is there a new Lister opening?

I am almost at the end of my 2 months and this is still too frustrating.

That depends which button you push.

If you push OK you only make a temporary change for that directory in that window. Close the window and the change is forgotten.

If you click Save then you have the option of saving the format for the current folder or for all folders.

If you click Save->For All Folders, like it says right at the top of the FAQ I linked, then it should save the format for all folders.

There are exceptions, though. Some special folders like My Computer and Desktop are handled by Explorer and Opus doesn't have as much control over them. The FAQ links to another FAQ which explains how to save the format of those folders. Which folder are you downloading into?

Thanks for your quick reply!

That is what I do.

That is what I do.

My Documents/Downloads

If I take any folder, set it to exactly how I want it with only a column for name, type, and modified, sorted by name and then save folder options for all files as above, then create a short cut, put it on the desktop, close Directory Opus, open it from the shortcut, it comes back with the size column and sorted by size.

What else can I try, perhaps just uninstall & reinstall?

Go to Preferences - Folders - Folder Formats and expand all parts of the list there. Go down the list and you will see all of the saved formats for specific folders and for certain types of folders.

Pay particular attention to the Content Type formats which can kick in automatically if a folder contains many files of particular types.

Thanks!

I edited them all back to default.

I also noticed the check for sort in the Tools | Folder Options Columns box, I am a long way closer to getting how this thing works!

So does that mean the issue is resolved now?

Note: to make 'manually' editing folder formats faster and easier...

While in Preferences->Folders->Folder Formats, you can actually right-click (click RMB) on a particular format that is already set up the way you'd like, select 'Copy' and then click RMB on other formats and select 'Paste'. Useful for when you have many (but not ALL) folder formats you want to be the same... without actually double-clicking and manually editing each individual format...

Yes, it resolved the problem, and I think I can see how to do things more more easily from here on.

happy new year!

I noticed that both in this thread and in the FAQ about Folder Formats there is mention about setting the sort order for particular folders by going to "Folder Options>Display>Sorting Options" and choosing from a drop down menu of available sort orders (e.g. "modified", "type", etc.). However, I don't seem to have this option available; I can't seem to find a way to set a particular folder to automatically sort by my preferred sort order. Here's a screen shot of my Folder Options dialogue:

Am I missing something?

It's done on the Columns page now. There's a Sort checkbox that you can click on.

I've updated the text at the bottom of the FAQ which referred to the old way.

I see it now. Thanks Leo!
