Subscription Pricing

I'm still running Ver 10.5, I bought it way back at the beginning of Win7, I'm running Win11 now and it still works perfectly, I have no idea how many years that is but well, prob 12-13 years so it seems pretty good value to me, I don't use all the bells and whistles that it has so upgrades aren't a big deal to me, I will grab 13 though b4 the end of the month though

Opus:
First thing I open in the morning
Last thing I close at night

Can't complain about that

AUD convert USD

Converts as one might surmise Australian Dollars in US Dollars.

@pro Obviously EU-only stores or ones showing localized currencies don't count, but USD absolutely is the currency of the internet (if not of the world). Not the least thanks to Silicon Valley.

So you have shown that the US dollar is the world's leading currency. Now all you have to do is show that an Australian company based in Australia is legally obliged to quote its sales prices in US dollars?

  1. DOpus is the basis for all my other computer activities. I use it to organise and provide the data and files to be further processed by special software.
  2. Like a Swiss army knife, it contains many tools that are fully and professionally developed.
  3. DOpus is developed by a dedicated and attentive team that also offers educational support.

I thought we were past this. I literally never said that, only that if something could be said about USD pricing which was brought up, it's that it could help making the price seem more attractive.

That’s planned. Hasn’t been done yet as it’s not going to be needed for another year.

Opus is a full-time job for three people. This isn’t a weekend hobby project.

OK, there's something to be said for that. When I came across DOpus years ago, I was a bit worried about the price, discovered AUD, googled the exchange rate and had a good laugh.

I'm assuming that someone who knows how to use a file manager will - like me - come up with the appropriate notation for the price

For me, it boils down to this:

  1. We are buying an excellent product at a reasonable price.
  2. We can use that product until the end of time without spending a single cent more.
  3. We get updates for a purchased period of time.
  4. When we no longer need improvements, we simply do not renew our subscription (see 2).

I am very happy with this arrangement.

I completely agree, plus a want to add something:

If you buy a file manager for 80 AUD, you probably already have a need for a more powerful tool and probably aren't just a casual user who once a week copies a few files from one place to another. You probably already know which advanced features Opus offers that help you to get the things done you need to get done and that's the reason you buy it in the first place. After that initial purchase you have one year (or in this case now two years) to optimize your workflow, to find additional stuff Opus can do for you which you probably never have expected before you bought it and get new features occasionally. So, at the end, it comes to: does Opus help me enough to get my stuff done to make the 25 AUD every year worth it and I'm fairly sure, for most people who decided to buy a 80 AUD file-manger in the first place, the answer is: yes. I honestly think that this topic, for the majority of DOpus users, is a non-issue in the long run - even for those who don't particularly like any kind of subscriptions like myself. And if you still decide to not renew for whatever reason... you still have last the Opus version forever.

Other companies would simply make two new versions a year and sell them for $20 each. I don't like subscriptions either, Dopus is the only one I will probably have for now. But I understand the need for businesses and cash flow rather that chunks of money coming in every couple of years.

Perhaps calling this a "subscription" is misleading, it's actually a maintenance/upgrade coverage.

Here's an example of such models in other software, nowhere does it say "subscription":

I agree on this point, the word "subscription" should be a maintenance fee (1 year/ 2 years). In my opinion, most people would think the word "subscription" would be like Adobe or Microsoft 365, you have to pay for a subscription or you can't use the software.

In the course of this one thread, we have people claiming that a subscription pricing model won't increase our overall costs, and at the same time developers pointing out that they are a small team dealing with inflation, etc...

Here is a possible solution that hasn't been mentioned. The developers can start a Go Fund Me to help them get out of this tough time they are in. These have been very successful in helping people in need. All you have to do is start one, and mention that you are a small development team struggling to make ends meet... give them specifics such as you live in a small, run down apartment, your car is being reclaimed, the kids are malnourished (whatever might best apply). I think this is a great way to help get you through this time of economic hardship... and by taking this route you can keep your software prices low and help fight inflation for everyone. Everyone wins!

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. The entire world is dealing with inflation.

We aren't in a rough time, either.

Not sure where this wild speculation is coming from.

I don't care what anyone else says, I fully expected this announcement and am happy you guys decided to go this route and not a mandatory subscription.

Wow that kind of really impressed me. I would never have thought that Dopus is selling so good to pay the bills for 3 families.
Don't get me wrong. It is a really good tool maybe the best file manager ever but untill now I could no one other get it buying. I show it to everyone who looks over my shoulder while using it. Mostly they only say: "Oh you are not using Total Commander anymore?". I think I use it at least for more than 10 years now every day.

That's great that you guys are going to do that. People need to stop with the knee jerk reactions. You guys are super honest and simply not out to get us like some seem to think.

maybe each of them has four wives? There are already 12 families! 6 children each - already a lot)) (87 people, if I counted correctly)

I think that over the last two years or so many people have wondered how Directory Opus has survived without new version income. The overwhelming majority of people have posted again and again that they were more than ready to give money to them. People want Directory Opus to survive.

The thankyou to them for many years of free updates became kind of transcended.
Just so there is no doubt, Yes GPSoft thankyou !

I myself after a many year absence from the forum kind of hinted at something about AI photo tagging and indexing. I asked if Allen Turing was on the 50 pound note, which I think it may be. ( Hint , replace with Leo ) That was long ago now.

The beginning of this now long thread was only a simple opinion of a prima facie emotional disgust.
We began discussing this and now the thread is approaching 100 entries.

I don't think anyone has done anything wrong on this thread.
Some of it is Horse Hockey , but that is fine. No damage has been done, it is nothing wrong.

But, I think we're getting a little moot though.
It's kind of like saying if you blow your self up, you'll get 73 virgins and paradise.
Who the hell would want that ! Out of their minds I think !

Thanks GPSoft !
Thanks Jon.
Thanks Leo.
Thanks Greg.

I was surprised to see the subscription model appearing and immediately thought "not another one ", given that everything seems to be going subscription these days......BUT (and it's a big BUT!!).

Having used a huge range of applications over MANY years, I have to say Directory Opus is without a doubt THE BEST application I have ever bought. I still keep finding things that is does every time I poke around in it, and they have done such a brilliant job of developing it they deserve to earn a fair income from it. I will happily pay for it going forward given that if GPSoftware keep developing to the standard they have done in the past it will be worth it.
But here's a suggestion....
I bought a lifetime licence for (IDM) Ultraedit when it came out ( cost about 2.5 times the licence fee ) and have enjoyed 'free' updates ever since. Perhaps GPSoftware might consider such an option?
I'm sure many of their loyal users would go for it???
