Suggestion: Pinned folder tabs

You could do that using a script (OnAfterFolderChange event, check the path, set the color based on whatever rules you want).

Same can be done with the labels themselves, if the simple built-in codes don't do what you want. There's a script which does more complex label rules in the Buttons & Scripts area here.

Folder Formats can also set tab colors, so you could have a format for all folders on each drive, for example.

Yet another idea, pertaining to the same topic:
I noticed I do prefer the large X-close button to "no close button" (double-click to close) and also to "small close button". I had the idea it would be great if (all) the X-buttons would only show up when the mouse pointer is within the area of the tabs bar. (I think it might be best if all x-buttons would show up then, not just the one of the one tab where the mouse pointer is.) -> This would allow more text to be shown, yet also usage of the nice large X-buttons.

Hello, I wanted to say I ended up using vertical tabs permanently, positioned between folder tree and file area. I was able to get the needed space from certain columns (like attributes) that I don't need most of the time, setting them to collapse when Viewer Pane is active.

Vertical tabs are actually superior because
a) you have "almost" unlimited space
b) they keep their size and don't shrink
c) you can read them easier (less eye movement to find a certain tab)
d) as a result of b), closing them is also easier
e) and they even auto hide the close button!

I recommend to everybody to give vertical tabs a try! I am now almost annoyed by horizontal tabs :-))

Thanks in particular to Leo and Jon for the great support here! And to Chuck for prompting me to give vertical tabs a try. I hope this helps other users with similar questions.

let's have a wee screenshot of the setup you decided to stick with!
not something i have tried though i don't think i'll ever find the perfect DO config

It's rather simple/conventional, I do stuff like average users mostly.

The space on the left side of the viewer pane is to accomodate checkbox mode.
I find it a bit difficult sometimes to configure culumns, I wish there were a minimum AND a maximum that one could enter in the settings of a column, then I would configure that for "Name".

When the viewer pane is not visible, the columns attributes, Size (BYTES), and location show up. Also for find results useful.
I use "size" as a simple way to tell if files are identical (instead of checksums), and at the same time I can see the exact size that way. I don't have a situation where it is highly likely that checksums would tell sth different from what the size column does.
