Synching puzzle

I have a file-handling puzzle which I can't resolve.
I have 2 hard drives, each with > 100K photograph files on - work drive D which was synced to backup drive E.
Over the last few months I have been carrying out a long-overdue cull of dross on drive D which has deleted more half of the files.
I can't work out a good way to sync the 2 drives now, and keep them synced - do I need another drive as a temporary store?

You could do a one-way sync or check Delete destination files... if you want to clean up the backup drive.

Ha! That would appear to be the answer! I have very often used synchronise, but never noticed that handy feature.
Thank you!
