An over eager techie blocked out the dir opus icon from the sys tray. How can I get it back please?

Unless they changed the setting in preferences to not display the icon then you'll need to speak to the techie who did it.
If he hid it via Windows then you can get it back by right-clicking the taskbar. Properties. Notification Area. Customize. (At least that's where it is in Vista.)
If he toggled the Opus preferences option (unlikely) then that is under Settings -> Preferences - Miscellaneous - Windows Integration.
