Thumbnail column, empty folder glitch

Thumbnail column set to 52px shows empty folders smaller than folders with something in them

When set to 54px they display consistantly with other folder thumbnails

thumbnail settings

Windows 11 is returning thumbnails for the folders with something in them, but not for the empty folder. So the empty one displays an icon instead, which will snap to the largest icon size that can fit (without scaling it).

Turning off Use Windows folder thumbnails where possible avoids the issue. (It's off by default these days, largely due to Windows 11 initially removing folder thumbnails completely, and then adding them back but still not doing a great job with them compared to older OS.)

liking the windows 11 icons, please put in a fix when you can.

Additional:
image

This is a SS of 2 folders in thumbnail mode, the size of the thumbnails makes no difference.
The first folder contains folders only, no files.
When a file is added it will change to normal size, if the file is then deleted the folder thumbnail will remain at normal size.

Please fix.

Directory Opus 13.6.11 (Beta) Build 8930 x64
OS 10.0 (B:22631 P:2 T:1) SP 0.0

Still no fix for this bug, not just happening with empty folders

that folder has many sub-folders in but no files at root level, when a file is placed at root level in that folder it renders properly, then the file can be deleted and it does not revert back to its shrunken state.

An improvement for this will be in 13.7.1.

v13.8
all three of these folders have no files at parent level and multiple sub-folders.

not sure if any progress has been made with this glitch, but still present and annoying.

The change was in 13.7.1 (and is still in 13.8).

You might need to clear the thumbnail cache (close all windows except Preferences first, too, so they don't keep any thumbnails in memory).

followed instructions, then opened Directory Opus, navigated to the same folder as above, the thumbnail did initially render properly then it instantly shrank back down to the size in the image above. :frowning:
the video does show what is happening at the beginning, it is very quick though.

So it's working for all the similar folders, just not that one?

There's probably something about that folder which is making it use an icon instead of thumbnails. Right-click it, Properties, Customize and make sure there's nothing in there overriding the normal settings.

Nothing is associated with that folders AFIK

Looks fine.

Do you have any labels in Opus that might be overriding the folder's icon?

What happens if you make a new folder, move anything in the old one into it, then delete the old one and rename the new one to take its place?

No labels set that might be affecting that folder,
did a duplication just suffixing a '2' and this is the result

deleted the misbehaving folder and renamed the new one to the original and it remains normal.

The issue does happen in other folders now and then.

This seems to be a general problem since the upgrade of win11. Its preview picture is really bad. It doesn't work as well as the win10 preview picture.
No matter whether the folder is empty, or only files, or only folders, or both, there is a certain probability that the thumbnail may change.
Even if the thumbnail cache is cleared, this problem still exists.

Win11's folder thumbnails have indeed been less reliable (in fact, it didn't even have them for the first few years). That's why Opus doesn't use them by default.
