The Help reads:
{thumbnail:1:512} displays the thumbnail with normal border and 512 pixels in size (the image will be scaled to preserve the correct aspect ratio)
My setup:
{thumbnail:1:512}
in my Info Tip.- Advanced > max_thumbnail_size:
512
. - File Display Modes >Thumbnails > Appearance Size:
96 x 54
(non-square, a 16:9 ratio). - Several buttons to set thumbnails to 16:9 ratios, e.g.
Show THUMBNAILSIZE 96,54
.
Whilst I can understand scaling thumbnails down retaining their aspect ratio to fit nicely within the File Display thumbnails grid, if the Thumbnails Appearance Size preference is non-square, Info Tip {thumbnail}
s suffer from being scaled down just like File Display thumbnails (i.e. to <512px), when they needn't be.
For example, an image with more than 512px in either dimension could always display with a max of 512px in the Info Tip, but with a non-square Appearance Size value set, the {thumbnail}
might actually display with only a max of 374px instead, despite being many megapixels in size.
Only when I set Appearance Size to square do the thumbnails for large images always display with one of their dimensions maxed to 512px. It makes sense for this to always be the case for the Info Tip.
Ideally, {thumbnail:1:512}
would always show images at 512px if they're big enough, and not behave as if they must fit within the ratio of what Appearance Size is set to. This would also be an argument for displaying 512px {thumbnail}
s even when the File Display is set to show 512px thumbnails, as the Info Tip may be able to display the image with greater resolution than the File Display.
Some examples with my settings:
Shows as expected:
Unexpected, smaller than 512px (same image, rotated):
Non-16:9, but showing 512px width:
Square 1:1, but showing 290px width:
Again, if using a square Appearance Size, the Info Tip never fails to show the image with a max of 512px.
Thanks!
