Toolbar tooltips: ALSO with key held down

There is a tooltip option to have

  • Preferences / Toolbars / Options / Only with key held down

But I would like to have an option to show tooltips immediately on Shift down, but NOT disable the default behavior of tooltips appearing after some delay. Hence the "Also".

It's just usually I don't need the tooltips, and when I do it's ok to hover for a while and wait until they appear. But then sometimes (either when testing changes in custom buttons or learning someone else's toolbars) I'd like to avoid this delay. So having an option to hold Shift and see all the tooltips immediately would be helpful while also not breaking the regular workflow

There is also a recently added similar option for file tooltips, maybe it could also benefit from this?

That option is for info-tips for files & folders in the file display, but it sounds like you’re thinking of tooltips for toolbar buttons? How those work are configured under Toolbars in Preferences.

Yeah, pasted in search to test it out, but didn't realize the results were for the toolbars :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Anyway my point is still about the toolbars as that's where I remember the desire to have some immediate help from, though maybe it might also be useful for files?

These are the ones you can actually set up with the option you mentionned in the first post.

It takes way less than a second to display the button description when I hover it on a fairly old laptop : isn't that enough ?

That's only true for the unchangeable Control key? That delay doesn't affect the on-mouse-hover behavior?

less than a second to display ... isn't that enough ?

For a single item that's fine, but then when it's a few in a row... Like you have 15 items in your menu and would like to check which ones are missing a description or a hotkey? Hovering with a button pressed would get you to the missing item in a ~1-2 seconds, not in ~15

That makes me wonder if you've ever actually tried to do this, since even normal tooltips don't work like that. The first one to appear has a longer delay, but after that if you move to another button the next tooltip (and the ones after that) come up much quicker.

And with the "only with qualifier" option on, tooltips come up instantly. You just have to keep the key held down and move the mouse.

I have tried it several times before posting. Have you? They don't appear faster, they have exactly the same ~0.5 sec delay just like tooltips generally, the first time and on switching to the next button (check precise timing in a non-web player as there is sub-second precision here)

That's what this feature request is about! I just don't want to lose the no-key-held mouse hovers to be able to get tooltips instantly. I want both, not lose one to get the other

I tried and if I understood you correctly, I have to say, yes, that makes sense! o)

I was irritated that when "Preferences / Toolbars / Options / Only with key held down" is enabled, the tooltips don't appear anymore, but they come very quick, which is very handy(!) I did not know this before, very useful! o)

And yes, the option is called "Only with key.." so it kind of makes sense, that the tooltips don't appear anymore if the qualifier is not pressed! o) I think adding another option like below could solve this:

"Faster with key held down"

Enabling "Only with.. " or "Faster with.." would be up to you then, but you don't lose the regular tooltip handling (slower appearance) with the new option.

ps: The tooltips always show in the same speed here for me as well, I can't tell a difference at least, regardless of how I approach the button(s) or whether a tooltip was already open. With the "Only with.." option though, it's very quick, no "tooltip pause" at all.
