I tried to group folders by parent folder but it doesn't work. all i get is a single group named "Folders"
Which column did you group by? Grouping by the Parent Folder column works fine here.
You have Display / Keep folders at the top when grouped turned on in the folder format (Folder > Folder Options to edit the window's current format, or Preferences / Folders / Folder Formats to edit the saved formats).

This works but i want the folders to be on top of the files.
At the moment i don't have folders (with files and subofolders) that i want to be grouped but we'll see in the future
Do you mean you want multiple separate groups for files and folders?
Or you just want folders at the top in each respective group? (You can already do that.)
