I have downloaded 12.5 and rebooted twice but still have 12.4.

Are you using the auto-updater, or downloading the installer from the website?
Please download the installer via here and then verify the digital signatures to make sure it was fully downloaded. Double-click it to install it, follow the prompts, and reboot at the end when done.
Please also check that your antivirus is not blocking anything, as that is often the cause of the installer appearing not to do anything.

I did use the auto-updater. I have now downloaded from the website and confirmed the digital signature and rebooted to get the updated version. I take I will need to do this in the future.

You shouldn't need to, but something (probably antivirus) may be blocking the installer from working when it is run via the autoupdater.
