Using The Sync Command

Hey Guys & Gals:

I am a photographer and I backup my libraries in two ways

  1. Through Adobe Elements propriatary process
  2. A direct one-to-one copy process

My process to do the one-to-one copy process is to plugin that external drive, delete all the picture files, then copy in stages all my picture files. This is very time consuming as I have tens of thousands of picture files. So I tried the Tools/Syncronize command but it didn't work the way the Help file explained it. Her is what I did:

NOTE: at this time my library had 15 - 20 sub-dirs of photos that haven't been added to my backup drive yet.

  1. Had a lister up the would be my source.
  2. Selected the 'Sync' command.
  3. Set the source & destination drive/subdirs and used the following options:
    One Way
    Date (different) or size
    Ignore seconds
    Sync sub-folders
    Use filter *
    Hide unaffected files
    Automatically shrink panel
  4. After the comparing process a small window came up that would only let me sync or cancel. I could not access the two listers.
  5. So I started the 'sync' process. Only then could I access the listers.
  6. In the destination lister, almost all the files had red x's in their boxes and the process took 6 - 7 hours.

All I want to do is add new content to my backup drive. In other words, add any files that are in source to destination that aren't in distination.

Anybody got settings info I can use in the sync options to help be quickly and smoothly get this done.

Thank you

Dave

That suggests the files in the source & destination are no longer the same, so the sync tool will re-copy those files.

If you just want to copy missing files while skipping existing files (regardless of whether the files are actually the same), just do a normal copy and choose Skip All when prompted for the first conflict.

(You can also set up a button that will do the Skip All automatically, which can be useful if there's a lot of data to copy before you reach the first conflict. Shout if you need help setting that up.)

Thankyou Leo, I'll try that in the future. The SkipAll process.
