I just updated to latest stable version 13.18, which according to the new release/changes info, now calculates SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksums, plus there’s a new Calculate Checksums sub-menu.
To quote from new release announcement: -
The default Edit menu now includes commands for SHA-256 and SHA-512 checksums/hashes. (A new Calculate Checksums sub-menu now contains the old BLAKE3, MD5, and SHA-1 items, accompanied by new items for SHA-256 and SHA-512. Similarly, the Copy Other > Checksums sub-menu now has items for SHA-256 and SHA-512.)
Problem is I don’t have any of that. On the Edit menu I still only have the original MD5, SHA-1 and BLAKE3 checksums, plus I do not have a Calculate Checksums sub-menu.
The update installed ok, so what’s happening?

You need to reset Menu toolbar (but you loose your customisation).
Or go to Customize > Default toolbars tab and use slider to identify new commands, and drag it to your toolbar.
Also note there’s a typo in the default button for SHA-256. We’ll fix that in the next update, but you can edit the menu item to fix it now: Typo for HASH-256

I’ve tried resetting menus back to default/factory reset but my version of Dopus 13.18 doesn’t seem to have these new calculate checksums menu & sub-menu, or I can't find them.
I find it quite strange that they didn’t just automatically appear when the latest version 13.18 update was installed.
All I have in the drop down Edit Menu is MD5, SHA-1 and BLAKE3, with exclamation marks.
I tried resetting the toolbars as below, but it's made no difference.
Settings > Toolbars > Revert to Default Toolbar Set
and
Settings > Toolbars > Factory Reset Toolbars
None of the above did anything.
Other than completely uninstalling/reinstalling Dopus is there an uncomplicated way to get all of the latest / new menus & commands without messing about dragging things from Customize > Default toolbars tab to the toolbars? I ask because I will probably mess this up as I don’t understand how dragging commands to menus works, especially when I’ve already got Edit on my menu toolbar, so don’t want to end up with duplicates.
If you don't see them in the Customize / Default Toolbars tab, check Help > About Directory Opus to make sure 13.18 (or 13.18.1) is installed. Maybe you're still on the previous version.
Thanks, I’ve done it. The calculate checksums menu has now appeared after I factory reset the menu toolbar again. Not sure why it didn’t work the first time.
Do you know why new menu and commands don’t automatically appear when updates are done? Possibly because people may have customized their toolbars and it doesn’t want to overwrite this.
An issue I have now is SHA-256 is showing file too large when calculating checksum of a 20MB file. I should prob ask this in a different thread, but is there a limit on file size it can calculate?
Exactly that. If people have modified their toolbars, they won't want them to be reset every time we change the defaults. (And trying to modify edited toolbars would be too difficult in general, since they may be heavily edited.)
The Default Toolbars tab has a slider on the left that lets you highlight things added after a given version, to help you find and add new things to your toolbars (if you don't want to completely reset them).
You can increase the size limit for automatic calculations:
If you use the menu items on some files, it should ignore the size limit and calculate their hashes no matter what (along with a progress dialog that lets you cancel the operation).
The size limit comes into play when calculating hashes passively/automatically in the background, just from the column being turned on. Since hashing really large files can use CPU and SSD/HDD/network resources, it's good to have some kind of limit on automatic calculations. I myself increase it from the default 5000 KB to 50000 KB.
I know Dopus is a program that people customize to their liking, but would it be possible for the installer to check for modified toolbars? If detected, ask the user if they want to reset them to include the latest features? Or even simpler, don’t perform any checks, just ask whether to keep any customizations or to install as a fresh/new installation. Good for those who stick with the default settings (like me).
Thank you for explaining how to increase the CRC calculation file size limit. It's now showing properly in the lister. That config option reads like it only applies to md5 files but works for SHA too.
There are so many things to customize in Dopus, it's a fantastic piece of work, always something new to find. All this customization makes my first point a bit moot.
Btw, a nice menu feature to have would be Checksum Comparison with an expected value.. Paste in the known/expected checksum and compare it against the calculated checksum.
We've added an option in the next beta which lets you say you don't want the default toolbars to be editable, meaning they'll always reflect the current defaults.
