Video Viewer is Very Flaky

Video Viewer is Very Flaky

Before you ask me, yes I have read everything in the FAQ’s about Video not playing. All settings are as required including all of Windows Media Player associations.

It is just plain flaky. It will work sometimes and not at other times (on the same exact video files).

Double clicking on a video will play it ONLY when the Show the Lister Viewer Pane is up. When it is down the full screen viewer is black, it does have sound but no video.

Yesterday the Show the Lister Viewer Pane was showing videos but the full screen one did not. Today it is the other way around; like I said just plain flaky.

Why is this happening?

Thanks again (for everything)

If there are problems with video playback then they're down to your video codecs and/or splitters. Opus just asks them to play the files, and video playback of all formats works perfectly for me and others; the variable between machines almost always boils down to codecs.

By default double-clicking a video will not open an Opus viewer window. Unless you have associated your video files with d8viewer.exe it shouldn't involve Opus at all and any problems there point to a general video playback issue on your machine.

Depending on your graphics card/drivers and codecs you may also only be able to play one video at a time, so trying to double-click a video while one is playing in the viewer pane, or trying to open the viewer pane while a video is playing in another program, may not work and may leave you with black windows instead. As I say, it depends on your system. On mine I can play lots of videos at once without problems.

Remember that Opus essentially uses the same APIs for video playback that Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, etc. use. If you're experiencing problems it's often a good idea to see if you get the same issues when using WMP. Opus and WMP are not exactly the same, so sometimes stuff works in one but not the other, but if something doesn't work in either then it makes it easier to rule things out.

Here we are again, Leo;

I do have all of my video files associated with d8viewer.exe.

They do play correctly (when double clicking on a video in Opus) when I associate them with JRiver’s Media Center; they of course then play using the JRiver viewer.

All videos play perfectly on all my other players, Windows Media Center and JRiver Media Center (my primary do-it–all player). They will also play all the files in a folder simply by clicking on any one in the folder.

Opus viewer (when it will play) will play only one file; I have even tried selecting all the files in a folder but it only plays the first one.

Also it will not repeat the video even though I have that turned on.

I am running an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 video card with the latest drivers (which I update monthly). Video has never been a problem before so I am at a lost.

One other thing is that I am using FFDShow which works just finw with JRiver; do you think that may be the problem?

Thanks again;

FFDShow is generally good, although occasionally a duff version comes out which fails badly, it's generally very good. I use FFDShow myself as my main codec, just installing some splitters in addition to it.

Note that newer versions of FFDShow keep a list of excluded/included processes so it's possible that dopus.exe isn't using FFDShow at all. That would explain why other programs work okay but Opus doesn't. You can check that in the FFDShow video decoder configuration applet:

FFDShow was not it.

I just uninstalled it, rebooted and the same problem is still there.

I don't know at this point what to do.

That suggests you have other video codecs on your system. If you add the Video Codec column to Opus and go to a directory with some AVI files in it, what are they reported as?

Reinstalling FFDShow may be a quick fix since it should (as I understand things) re-establish itself as the handler for all its formats.

Video playback on Windows can be very complex if you've got a lot of codecs installed, especially since so many codecs are so buggy :frowning:, and it can be difficult to tell what's installed and what is being used to handle files. There are some tools out there which can help (e.g. graphedit) but they're a little clunky and sometimes difficult to find...

I downloaded and installed Media.Player.Codec.Pack.V3.1.0: C-Net gave it 4 1/2 stars. It also installed FFDShow so it is now back in.

The good news is that it caused no additional damage as all is running as before. The bad news is that all is running as before; meaning no improvement in video with the Opus video viewer.

I also downloaded ZOOM Player plus two others; they are all doing the same thing as Opus video player, sound but no picture.

I then installed the latest ATI Multimedia Center software for my All-In-Wonder TV tuner/Video card. Before it actually installed, I got a pop up saying UCI in not installed. Some components may not work correctly .

The ATI install went exceptionally fast, too fast as I have installed this software many, many times before. When it was done, the ATI Command Center that normally comes up on the edge of the screen was nowhere to be found. All the various programs were there but when I ran the video player it too had sound and no picture.

The only two players that work correctly are the one in ACDSee image manager and the one in JRiver’s Media Center. I have no idea why those two work but none of the others will not.

I did a Google search on UCI, UCI software and UCI Windows and found nothing of value. I also did a Microsoft Knowledgebase search but it too came up blank.

What the heck is UCI? Where do I find it?

I don’t know if this is related or not but my DVD drive will no longer play a DVD movie. It loads CD’s ok but no DVD’s. I re-installed the ATI DVD drivers but no help there.

As I have been using only ACDSee and JRiver Media Center for all of my video for the last couple of years, I now suspect that the problem of sound and no picture on other video players may have been there all along but I just did not know it.

As requested.

Does not look too good, does it

Many blank Codacs.

It can be a pain fixing things when video stuff isn't working in Windows. :frowning:

I don't personally know what to suggest you try, but since the problem isn't restricted to Opus it means you can hopefully find advice from places like AfterDawn (lots of guides and forums to do with video software) and Doom9, as well as more generic Windows help sites/forums.

If anyone reading has any ideas then please throw them in.

Oh, one idea I do have: If you open the FFDShow video configuration applet you might find that changing the Overlay and Output options makes things work. Just be sure to make a note of what they are beforehand so you can undo any changes. Black video and working sound sometimes means that the decoder is outputting video in a format which your graphics hardware/drivers don't understand, and you can change that via those two pages in the FFDShow configuration.

Lots of players are supplied with some built-in codecs/splitters/demuxers etc. This may be the case here. The results you get mean that actually you don't have system-wide support for the videos you try to display.

X.
