Viewer Lister Pane display problems

I am unable to correctly display/preview .pdf, .doc and other file types on 1 partition. Everything works fine on other computers/partitions.
When I click on pdf files IE attempts to show them in the viewer pane and I get a pop-up to download the file.
Word documents show up in hex format.
PDF-ActiveX is enabled and I have tried different viewer plug-ins for .doc yet they do not show up correctly. I guess the file associations are incorrect but how come DO has them correct on other computers? I am using DO 9.0.0.7 run from a USB.

How can I correct this and do I need to fix the association for each file type or is there a "shortcut" to restore all associations?

Thanks.
AM

P.S. I have looked around for a solution on the forum but haven't found any clear answer. Let me just add that both pdf and doc files open correctly if double-clicked (i.e. they open up in Acrobat 7 and MS Word).

Please update to the latest version of Opus.

Opus 9.0.0.7 is over a year old and there have been a number of improvements since then. There's no reason at all to still be using 9.0.0.7 if you have a valid Opus 9 licence.

You're right Leo, I am a little slow with the upgrades...
Anyway, upgraded to 9.1.1.0, exported to USB and the same problem persists.
Next step?

What's different about the partition that doesn't work compared to the ones that do?

Are there any non-ASCII (Unicode) characters in the file paths? If so are short-file-names disabled for that volume? (Opus has a General->Short Name column you can use to check if you're not sure.)

If you open IE itself and drop some of the files on to it, does it view them okay?

It's a "regular" XP partition but not as populated with software as other partitions. The paths are identical on all partitions as I store all information on a separate internal HD (in my case "O"). All pdf and doc files are accessible and open fine via DO on all partitions. The only problem is that the viewer lister pane on this partition is not able to show pdf files for preview.
Also; when I try to preview a pdf, the viewer attempts to open it with Internet explorer (within the viewer) - shows up as " Action canceled" and at the same time "File Download" window comes up. Additionally, the file to be "downloaded" always has wrong name (always starts with dopXX.pdf) and the path always points to c:\documents and settings........ when all files are on o:.....
I am attaching a screen capture.
Surprisingly, for good, doc, jpeg and other formats now appear to be showing correctly in the viewer pane... after the upgrade to 9.1...

I don't think it's relevant but I always run DO from USB regardless of partition/computer.

Thanks.

That is normal. PDF files are copied to your temp directory before the viewer opens them so that you are able to delete or rename the original document while viewing the copy.

So you can view PDF files okay on every other partition? If you copy a PDF file from the partition with the problem to another one and then open that in the viewer, does it work?

What happens if you open Internet Explorer and drop PDF files from the non-working partition on it? What about if you do it from the working partition?

FWIW, I have the same problem with PDF files. When I select one I get the "action canceled" page in the viewer pane and the PDF opens in Adobe Standard. I also run DOpus from a memory stick (in work). At home where I use the installed version I don't have this problem.

What happens if you open Internet Explorer and drop one of the non-working PDF files on it?

Exactly the same as Opus... it opens in Adobe Standard.

Sounds like you don't have Adobe Reader installed. I don't think Acrobat itself provides an ActiveX reader component on its own.

(If you don't want Adobe Reader you can also use Fox It or one of the other readers.)

That is the problem; that same file either copied or accessed from a different partition (same path) opens within viewer pane and I can view/scroll/zoom etc.

Does not open and "file download" window comes up. Does NOT prompt Adobe to open the file (like in blueroly's case.)

I will install Acrobat reader and will let you know.

Thanks!

Leo,
That was it. Preview works like a charm with Reader 9 !!!
Made my day.

Thanks a bunch!

I have Adobe Reader 7.0 installed as part of the company standard build, in addition I have Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.0 and CutePDF... whatever that is

Would it be worth uninstalling Adobe Acrobat Standard or CutePDF...? I'd rather not though!!!

If you have Adobe Reader installed then it might be configured not to open within other programs like web browsers and Opus. Load Adobe Reader and ensure that this is turned on:

Edit -> Preferences / Internet: Display PDF in browser

If that is on then it's possible that something else may have overwritten Adobe Reader's registration as the ActiveX control for PDF files. Reinstalling Adobe Reader would fix that. (No need to uninstall it.)

I have these options switched on in both Acrobat Standard and also Acrobat Reader.

Any other suggestions please...?

Did you try reinstalling Reader as Leo suggested?

With both switched on, maybe something is getting its knickers in a twist.

How does your browser, or DOpus, know which to use?

Have you tried ringing the changes between these and see what happens?

I switched them both off and it still didn't work. I switched Standard on and it still didn't work. I switched standard off and Reader on and it finally worked. Great bit of detective work. Thanks guys
