Windows 8 compatibility
@tekguru: If you use MC just for viewing TV I would recommend trying DVB-Viewer. It's the "DOpus" of TV-tools - a lot to configure first but once finished... what I say, you've DO

PS: Don't drive too fast
Right will give that a go........

Me... never!

Defragging an SSD won't do anything much except reduce the life of the SSD, which is why Windows won't let you do that.

Going back to Windows 8, I am amused that the Windows Explorer icon on the Start Screen launches Opus instead of Explorer, because it is a link to the Libraries folder and not Explorer itself. That's like if the Internet Explorer icon linked to a URL instead of IE, on the assumption that IE would always be the default web browser.

Microsoft still don't 'get' that not everyone wants to use Explorer to manage files, even though their own top-level Windows 8 blog fobs off criticism of Explorer by saying it probably comes from people who can be ignored because they'll keep using alternative file managers whatever happens to Explorer. (So they're glad we exist when it's an excuse to do a half-arsed job in their software, but they forget we exist when we keep telling them that Windows needs a proper, documented and supported API for changing the default file manager, just like you can change the default web browser, image viewer, movie player, and so on.)

On the plus side, Windows 8 doesn't seem to have broken the Explorer Replacement stuff, for once.

Yep, so will have to decide whether to vape my good Windows 7 install or load up under VMWare.

I think I'll leave it as it is an wait till release at home and only play with a virtual version. At least I can get used to it at work!

Don't defrag a SSD! Each SSD has got limited lifecycles, defrag shortens their life and is not necessary as a SSD is fast enough. Win7 auto-excludes the drive for this reason.

For non-experienced users best is creating a partition within Win7 setup, allthough it usually creates also an unnecessary recoveryโ€”partition of 100 MB. Main reason to do so is the correct alignment (google SSD alignment).

Experienced user may use Diskdirector or similar, setting 1st partition after exact 1.024 or 2.048 KB free space for bootrecord (alignment).

Next you should care off is deactivating Win-services which reduces lifecycles. These are prefetching, superfetch and indexing/windows-search. The temp-file on new hardware with 4GB+ Ram is not heavily used, so there's no need to move to a normal hdd, but should be set to a fixed value (deactivating is not recommended, some apps still requieres it).

There also tools to check correct SSD-installation, search for it in google.

Unfortunately installing SSD is a bit tricky, some newer SATA also requires a correct alignment.

Win8: Tried it yesterday and I think DO will become more than ever before a "must have". Missing the startmenu, don't understand why MS doesn't combine Taskbar and Metro-GUI, switching between those two screens is cruel! Also accessing the right "start-bar"... hey MS, I wonder that you have built-in a mouse-driver!!!

Then the settings: Nice, no question, but some settings are here, some there, some the old way...WTF?

Would like to try longer, but wasn't able to access my other PC's via adminstrative-shares even everything in network-settings was set correctly (not supported anymore?).

I'd prefer to but a hedgehog where the sun don't shine than install Win8.. it incorporates all the social media tripe i hate so much. Just call me a grumpy old man!

Once nice little shortcut I just read about is Windows key + PrtScr, which will save a screenshot as a PNG file in your default Pictures folder.

No crash here when I do that in VMware, FWIW.

I suggest this has nothing to do with W8. There was an occasional issue in the last Beta release but that's resolved in the official 10.0.4 version. Please upgrade to the current version.

That was solved after a restart.

We can only hope. I just spent a couple of hours checking it out, and as far as I'm concerned the Windows 8 UI is a train wreck. Might well be fine on touchpads and phones, but forcing people to use metaphors that are appropriate for small touch devices on potentially large desktops is a non-starter. Oh well, maybe Windows 9, then...

At least you guys at GPSoft listen to your customers

When I installed Windows 8 DP, it did not last long on my computer (all of about an hour) and I said then, "I'll wait for the beta". Well, I have been playing with Windows 8 CP since Feb. 29 and like it very much. I would have liked it less had DOpus not worked. DOpus has performed in same fashion as on my Windows 7 system. I must admit that I had a period of adjustment to go through but there is lots of help out there which I used. Adjusting was made easier with DOPus along my side
