For anyone using the Windows 10 Index search facility, it might by worth noting that after many, many months and many attempts, Microsoft finally appears to have fixed the problems via (KB4535996) Hotfix.
After installing the update, Search is back to its blindingly fast best and SQL queries against the search database are working correctly.
