Wish introducing ribbon in DO13

Wish introducing ribbon in DO13 to make the UI looks more modern as what system explorer dose in win10.

There was lots of talk about it in the past and the conclusion is you can always make your own ribbon(s) with toolbars.

Maybe the GPSoft could implement some tab support for the toolbars.

Long discussion of ribbons here (as well as some other threads, but that's a good one):

I would reiterate the point that it's better to talk about the specific aspects of the ribbon you want, since "ribbon" is a vague concept thing that means different things to different people.

Some of the things you might want may already be possible.

Just expect for new look in DO13

I've never found ribbons make a UI easier to use. They might look "new and trendy" but having to constantly hunt through the various tabs in Word to find a particular command has totally put me off them.

I completely agree with Jon about ribbons. They look pretty at the expense of hiding what you need when you need it.

Microsoft introduced the ribbon toolbar 13 years ago, and it's still around because it works great. There's nothing "new and trendy" about it.

The latest version of Word has 9 ribbon tabs. That's 9 toolbars that are a single click away. Seems like a very efficient way to arrange things to me. What's the alternative, to bury all those commands away in menus? Or maybe show all 9 toolbars on the screen at once?

I would love to see some ribbon elements built in to Directory Opus. Proper tabbed toolbars, mixed large and small icon buttons, toolbar labels, options to control button width, word wrapping in button labels... Fun stuff!

I, like Jon, find the ribbon non-intuitive. It was easier for ME to use the old MS Office and other software than the new ribbon format. I am not sure it has to be that way - it could just be that it was MS that did it and they did a poor job. Problem is, what is intuitive to you may NOT be intuitive to me. Our logic may differ. So I expect a feature to be in one section but instead it is in another. One file manager I know of added a Ribbon, but kept the "old" format as well so users could make their own decision. Not sure how difficult that is but hopefully if DOPUS ever added a ribbon format they would make it optional.

Yes,optional is necessary if considered, although I prefer ribbon. In my opinion,by the way, ribbon is just the widen version of the dropdown menu before, which meet the needs naturaly with the function become more and more strong.

Interestingly on the point of Microsoft's use of the ribbon in Office:

I note on the latest version of desktop Outlook from a Microsoft 365 subscription the ribbon now defaults to a new 'Simplified Ribbon' option which is basically a short ribbon (like a one row toolbar) that changes depending on the higher level selection.

So it appears MS are not sure the real estate for some tall ribbons is worth it however this simplified ribbon is even worse than a full ribbon which at least has more on it. The simplified often has to add an overflow button with drop down menu!

My view is larger ribbons sacrifice space and speed of access for looking good and are only suitable for simple UIs. Give me a good concise standard toolbar like DO any day.

That it's still around doesn't mean it works great or that people like it. Microsoft is constantly changing the ribbons and more and more they start to look like the old fashioned toolbars.

One ribbon does not equal one toolbar. All those options could fit on two normal toolbars. Toolbars that can be always in view so no need to click to see a toolbar's content. Also no tabbing around to search for the option I need. No wasted space by large buttons or text labels.
I've seen many ribbons where a simple toolbar or menu would suffice.

My biggest aversion to ribbons is that customization is really cumbersome. Sometimes it's not even possible to change existing tabs or controls.
DO is uber customizable, so if you want you can create your own surrogate ribbon.
