G'day all. Newbie on this forum - so treat me gently - OK?
Using HP laptop with XP-32 SP3 + full updates. I class myself as an advanced computer user, but not a guru by any means.
Changed to DOpus because of 'file not found' issues started happening using Avanquest's PDExplore. I had assumed that a PDExplore update was the culprit.
I now find that similar things are happening in Dopus. Been in contact with GPSoft. Searched this forum for "access denied (5)" and found no posts similar to my problem.
The Issues:
In my 'Ian' user account, I cannot, for example, write to the root directory of an external HDD. I cannot delete files from an SD card (and yes, the card is not mechanically locked).
I can write files to a FOLDER on the external HDD, and I can delete files from the SD card using IrfanView.
I have screenshots of some of these error messages.
In Admin account I can read/write/delete any file anywhere. As I would expect.
GPSoft has suggested it is a problem with the underlying OS, and as no-one else has reported this problem, I am inclined to agree that there is something in my set-up only.
Problem is that I simply do not know where to start looking to remedy these issues.
Any help would really be appreciated - as obviously not being able to use Dopus to its full potential is very frustrating.
Sounds like a permissions issue - nothing to do with Opus or any other software, it just sounds like the permissions on the root of the drive are set to prevent you from creating or deleting files. Use the Security tab on the Properties dialog for the drive to see what permissions are set.
Security tab? Got me there.
I don't see a security tab when I check properties for any drive in user account or Admin.
I've not come across individual drive permissions in XP before. More info please?
Even if it is individual drive security permissions, for the same drive/folder/file how does IrfanView delete when Dopus can't?
Wouldn't the same OS restrictions or disk permissions apply equally to both programs?
BEWDY MATE! Just goes to show one can learn something new every day.
Knew of the simple file sharing option, but never knew what it did. NOW I know!
Enabled full control for [Computer Name]\Users on all drives except C:\
Duh - so simple. That seems to have solved the problem. Time will tell.
WHY things changed I don't know, but now that all seems to be OK, I [almost] don't care anymore.
Maybe I didn't need to ditch Power Desk Explorer after all. But - hey - now I've discovered Dir Opus why go back?
