An error occurred renaming ... (5)

When trying to rename a Folder currently titled "Audible" on my D: drive, I get the error
"An error occurred renaming 'Audible':
access is denied. (5)"

The folder is directly under D:, so lengthy naming isn't the case here. I was simply trying to rename it as Semi-Audible instead!

Searching Dir Opus (v12.6 x64) Help has proved fruitless so far as to the precise meaning of the (5) in this context.

Also, not sure on how to proceed further with this renaming. Although my username now "owns" all the Folders and Files on this disc, I cannot (for love nor money, it seems!!) change the "Read Only" attribute for this folder. [Dir Opus is running as Administrator]

You'll most likely get a similar error message if you try renaming the folder in File Explorer or anything else, since the error comes from Windows rather than Opus.

Access Denied can have a lot of causes but in this case probably means something has locked the folder from being renamed. Probably Audible.

It could also be because the folder or its parent are permissioned to disallow your account from renaming the folder, but that is quite rare compared to something locking the folder.

So, you're saying that the (5) parameter is being passed by Windows to Opus, but that you (like me) don't know what it means?

Since I've taken full ownership of the root of the D:\ Drive, and passed on the inheritance down to the sub-folders, surely I should be able to dictate the status of all the Raed/Write flags for a folder just one level down? I don't see anything running which should be locking the folder, but thanks anyway.

5 means "access denied". It's the numeric error code, and Opus tells you both the numeric code (5) and the description of it ("access denied").

The problem is that "access denied (5)" can happen for quite a few reasons. One possible reason is that a program which is running has told the operating system to lock the folder from being changed, and you won't be able to change the folder until that program releases the lock or stops running.

Do you see the same thing in File Explorer or is this only happening in Opus?

Thanks, Leo. Your input is much appreciated.

I've rebooted the PC into Safe mode a couple of times now (and still no programs - other than Windows - running!) so no progress there.
Since there are no other programs running (to effect a lock on the folder) I guess I'll have to look for some program to permit me to unlock it!

You're right: I can't rename the folder in Windows Exploder either, but then it doesn't show Cause 5!

Thanks again!

There are always programs running in the background, even if the task bar doesn't indicate them. You can see them in Task Manager on the Details tab.
