An extra "Computer"

Hello:

I have reinstalled Windows (not by choice :frowning:, and now, in DOpus' Folder Tree, I have an extra "Computer" (second drive, indented). Whenever you click on it, it shows the content of the drive that was last open [clicked on] in the tree.

I have never seen this before. Would anyone know why it is showing?

Thank you!

Hans L

Could you post a screenshot of what you see in the tree?

Anything similar in Explorer?

Shoot, forgot to post the screenshot I had taken. Here it is. And no, not the same in WE./Hans L

@Jon / Leo:

In a quick attempt to repro HansL's issue... it seems things in the tree go several bits of foul depending on your starting folder and Prefs combinations.

Here's a screeny of what my tree normally looks like, starting folder in my Layout is a Library called 'My':

And here's what my normal settings for the tree look like:

After simply setting the 'Start Folder Tree at' option to 'Computer' here's what the tree looks like after simply clicking 'OK' out of Prefs:

And after closing that initial lister and opening a new one, here's what the tree looks like:

Whatever my layouts starting folder is, where's the 'Computer' node in the tree?

So... different issue than HansL, but still - more info about general tree goofiness.

Libraries isn't underneath Computer, so the Computer branch is hidden automatically when you're outside of it. If you go to somewhere like C: it will be added.

Fair enough - but that seems awfully strange and odd. If I've told it to show the Computer node as the first item in the tree - I've presumably done so because I place some importance over having the Computer node up at the top for easy access with the mouse or something. I don't think such a desire should also require that I make my layouts starting folder something underneath 'Computer' just to get it to show up automatically in the prized top slot of the tree I just gave to it in Prefs - or require me to have to use some other button or keyboard command to first go to some drive letter in order to get it it to show up in the tree...

For other items, you have control on the 'Contents' page to say whether or not you want them to show up in the tree. And you can get them to appear in the same fashion as you answered here - use some other means to load those locations in the file display, and they'll appear in the tree. Maybe 'Computer' deserves the same treatment?

But I'm on a soapbox for something that's not really even bothering me personally - since I'm happy with my normal settings. I only mentioned it since it seemed to bespeak other general weirdness in the tree to me, and my opinion on the 'Computer' node showing up aside - the results in 'Clipboard Image (2)' still don't make sense. The whole tree gets collapsed to just 'File Collections' and my current location gets whacked from the tree all together after OK-ing out of Prefs?

But - let me stop getting in the way of the OP's original issue here now...

The option controls what the root node of the tree is, but if the current folder isn't actually underneath the root node then this doesn't work, so the only option the tree has is to substitute a different root node that does contain the current folder. It's always worked like this (well, ever since Opus 10).

It's even documented:

Thanks for the screenshot.

If you select the top Computer folder, what's shown in the main file display? Does it also have a duplicate Computer item?

I wonder if there is a drive which is mounted in an unusual way? What does the Disk Management control panel say about the mounted drives? (It should show a list of them at the top. Don't make any changes yet, but it might reveal something if we look there.)

I have not gotten any notification of answers lately, so I will respond tomorrow. sorry for delay.

Leo, I cannot reproduce the "problem" now. Sorry that I had to rush through making changes in order to get my computer back up and working, including changing drive letters around. I do not know, however, what an "unusual way" in re mounting of a drive would be, but the previous D drive (on my SSD) was named (after the reinstall of Win 7) something like "$.....". It was unexpected (I have not seen that before), but I do not know what it signified. I have since changed it to a "normal" name.

Well, if the problem has not disappeared, I am happy, but if it reoccurs, I will try to be more systematic.

Regards,

Hans L
