Annoying sort problem

Probably something obvious that I've missed, but might be a bug.
Have just saved a file to a folder with some files already in it, the old files are all sorted properly but the new file appears at the bottom of the lister instead of where it is supposed to be.

If the sort order is reversed it appears where it should be

Have checked the status bar icon to see where the format comes from and tweaked the sort settings to see if that fixes the problem, which it doesn't. The only way to get it to sort properly is to manually sort it.

Check that Preferences / Filtering and Sorting / Sorting / Sort newly created and copied files isn't turned off.

When sorted by modified column get this result

Have starting restoring old backups to see what has happened, a backup from end of Jan works as expected, but mid May when I got the new system is not working as expected.

Also the original post is slightly wrong, the new file the red arrow is pointing to is in the correct order, it is all the other files called 'toolbar' that are wrong, the xcf were pinned ... I have unpinned them and just this moment discovered that the psd are pinned as well.
