Anyone got Viewer Pane video playback working on Win8.1.1x64

I've just moved from Win 7x64 SP1 to Win 8.1.1 x64 and have been struggling to get vieo playback in the Opus viewer pane working. Initially, MP4/MOV/FLV/MKV files crashed Opus (already sent dump to Leo but he says it's splitter/codec issue), and WMV/AVI/MPG files had audio but no video (although I got video+audio if I play in Windows Media Playerx64 at the same time).

I think I've solved the crash by updating LAMEACM.acm, but I can only get audio with no video.

I was wondering if anyone else running Win 8.1.1 x64 and Opus 11 has got video working in the viewer pane, and what codecs/splitters you are using ?

Have you tried the codecs and splitters recommended in the FAQs?

The Media Player Classic Home Cinema splitters have always worked well for me, along with ffdshow as the codec (although there are lots of builds of FFDShow so YMMV, and Windows has enough built-in decoders that you don't need ffdshow for most video types these days).

Remember that you need 64-bit codecs and splitters if you are using 64-bit Opus. Most video software is 32-bit so you may only have installed 32-bit versions of some of them unless you explicitly went for 64-bit or mixed installs.

Restored a backup image and renamed C:\Windows\System32\LameACM.acm to LameACM_old.acm, which solved the crash issue. The first time after doing this the MP4 file played fine in Opus. However, after trying to play other movie files (which played audio but no video), the MP4 file is also now only playing audio + no video.

I did notice that the video is visible when the viewpane is being resized or the lister window is being moved/resized. Just need to work out why...

Have you updated your graphics drivers? The out-of-box ones that come with Windows only tend to do the basics.

Was just about to post that it's probably a video driver issue. Rolled back to default windows display driver and it works fine. Just trying a different driver now.

And the drivers that come with any video card, or any new PC, are almost certainly out of date by the time the box reaches your desk.

The driver I was using was a WHQL driver obtained through Windows Update. Tried a slightly newer WHQL driver (which is latest one for my card) and it still has same problem. Tried one that was a lot older and it didn't work on Win 8.1.1. Restoring a backup and will continue to try other drivers.

The odd thing is that if I try one of the MP4 files first, both video and audio are displayed, but after trying another video, that same MP4 will not show video (apart from when pane resized or list windows moved).

This is odd - if I install a new video driver but don't reboot (ie. to finish driver installation), it works for all video files. As soon as I reboot, it stops working again.

If I disable the Movie plugin, so it uses ActiveX plugin which loads Windows Media Player in pane, it works fine for all video files.
