Background images issues

I am running v8 on my desktop, as i have not rebooted this machine in nearly 160 days, i do not want to upgrade.... the background images work fine on here.

under prefs/folders/folder formats i have:

  • Image set for network
  • image set for ftp
  • image set for collection

Under prefs/layout/lister styles, for the tab i use most often i have

  • the image on both left and right pane set to "default image"

If i change my background for "local drives" under folder formats it works great.

Now.....

On my laptop i am running DO 9.0.0.4. I initially imported my DO8 preferences into it, so everything is the same initially. I never touched the background images as i never had to. All my saved folder formats from my desktop are still there, but i do not have any formats set for c: and d:.. just some for some nested folders that do not exist on the laptop. which is fine, because i can just import the v9 prefs to my desktop when it comes time to upgrade.

By default i did not have anything set for local drives. So i added a background image and then set it for "local drives" just like i had done with my v8 install. While it works on the v8, nothing shows up on v9. The only background images that show up are the ones for FTP and collection. The ones I originally had in there for network do not show up at all. If i manually create a format for c: and d: then that works, but i do not want that.

Anyhow, the settings are the same in the preferences. Everything is set to "default" when i go to prefs/listers/styles .. for the tab i use by default i have the background set to default.

Under prefs/folders/folder format ... i have the old saved formats that i had on my old system, and under the section "default formats" i still have the background set on "network" and "ftp". All the others are set to "default image" except "local drives" which i put an image to.

I am lost at this point as it seems to work on my desktop on v8 but not on v9 on the laptop. Also the settings for network which I never touched does not work. FTP and Collections does.

Any ideas? I checked all the spots in the prefs that I can think of where something else may be overriding it somehow.

one other thing i just tried....

i copied the preferences from the "local drives" to "removable drives" and inserted a USB stick and those settings held.... I must have something somewhere that is overriding the settings i have for local disks and network drives that I cannot figure out.

If the format (in the Style/Tab/whatever) is set to < Default Image > then it will use whatever is set under the Preferences - Display - Images in the File Display drop-down. That's what the Default Image is.

Default Image doesn't mean it should carry on checking for other formats which might provide an image, it means use the default File Display image and stop looking.

If you don't want the format to define an image, so that other formats get a chance to define one, then you should uncheck the Image section of the format. (i.e. Turn off the "Image" checkbox directly above the drop-down list of images in the format.)

Nudel,

I understand.... Here is what I have now....

  • in prefs/display/images/standard file display image - is grey and no image shows up in there as I do not want a "default" picture to show up

  • prefs/listers/styles/laptop (laptop being the tab i use on the laptop) i go into the format of both left and right pane, and remove both checks for images

  • prefs/folders/folder formats/default format/local drives .... i set it to the image that I want. I also set the image for network drives and removable media

i apply the settings and for good measure i close DO from taskbar and restart.... i click the Laptop tab on top, even though it is active by default, but no picture shows up. However the image for removable media does show up.

ok I tried this, kinda wonky...

under prefs/display/images i set the default image to the image i want... then it seems to work.

For the network image.....

I have a link on the drive bar that says "go computer1" where computer 1 is the name of the computer on the network. i then either click the share I want or use the breadcrumb bar to select a share... and it goes to where i want. however no image shows up. If i manually enter the path \computer1\share then the network image shows up. What is up with that?

also, for my CDrom... it seems to be taking the settings from the "custom" format... not sure what that format is for but i cannot disable it like the rest of them. Normally i put the image for the CD as a custom format under the section "folder formats" but i removed it to test what would happen, if it would assume that it was a removable drive or what, but found out instead if used the custom format.

OK it seems to work now. Under prefs/display/images/standard file display image ... i actually had to associate something in there instead of leaving it blank.

The only outstanding thing is... if i type \computer1 and then get a list of available shares and click on one, the image for network does not appear. However if i type in or use a button to take me to \computer1\share then it works.

The Custom format is like the Default-Default. It's the last format that Opus will check if no other matching format defines a particular setting.

I can reproduce the problem with the wrong background image being used if you navigate to a share via the computer parent. I'll file a bug report for you.

You set something for prefs/display/images/standard file display image, but that wasn't what I meant. I meant the File Display drop-down in the bottom half of the same page (not the Standard File Display in the images list at the top half which is just there to confuse people).

Opus will always list CD-ROM Drives, using the Custom Default Format, not the Removable Drive Format. I actually submitted this issue a long time ago, you can read m analysis here. I will be resubmitting this issue, along with some other Feature Requests related to Folder Formats And Folder Options.

I managed to get everything working just fine. I first load DO and it shows the local disk background image the way I want... i click on my shortcuts to the network paths and it changes the background the way i want... great!

I just upgraded to v9.0.0.9, and now when i click on the network path, the background image does not change at all. I am able to get it to change to the network background image if:

  • I open a new tab and use my network shortcut buttons.
  • If I am already in the network path on my first tab and then i duplicate the current tab, then the image shows up

Nothing changed when I upgraded. I made sure not to do any customization apart from what I mention in the last paragraph. I do not have the check box ticked off for the lister style I use, so I am not sure why it is not working now that i upgrade.

I also noticed that the background color for my drive buttons went to a dark gray during the install. I had to go customize it and change the color to "default" to get it back to the normal color again.

I just noticed, it is not just the network background image, but also the removable disk image does not change on the initial tab, but changes just fine if i open a 2nd tab

I tried the following to rectify this, but sort of succeeded. I dont know why i have to do anything as it was working perfect on 9.0.0.4 with the help i got... y it would change i dunno....

Anyhow...

I got it to work if:

  • prefs/display/images.... i remove the image from the "standard file display" so it shows empty
  • i add the image via styles

while this works, when i first open the lister initially the style i load first shows no image until i click the tab on top to reload the format.

Keep in mind, you initially told me to uncheck the box for styles and to add the image via display/images .... that worked for 9.0.0.4

Now, if i use the new settings but put the image back under display/images i get the same problem. The backgroun images wll only change and work properly for network/removable drives ONLY if i duplicate the current tab, but will ONLY show the default image setup in display/images on that first tab

This is really annoying

Tabs and styles can have their own saved formats, which includes the background images. You probably just need to re-save the style / tabs / default lister (depending on what it is you're opening) with the correct backgrounds in place -- or maybe save them with the Images part of their formats (or their entire formats) turned off.
