i am very new to the program and have tried to search for an answer to this.
the lister viewer pane seems very convienent for showing the file contents of various formats but when it comes to .RAR or .ZIP files it defaults to the hex display...
can the lister viewer pane be configured to list the files inside a .rar or .zip file without double-clicking and opening the file ? the hex view of these files seems kinda pointless
Someone could write a plugin to do this but at the moment there isn't one. What's wrong with double-clicking the files to enter them? Any viewer plugin which someone makes will never be as powerful as the proper file display.
Don't forget that you can open archives in a second file display in the same window, or open them into a separate window. I think alt-double-click opens things in a second display by default (not certain I have the right default key but you can change it to whatever you want anyway).
You can preview ZIP files in the Preview pane if they are not pass protected (encrypted) but, you can not preview RAR files.
As to why this would be better than double clicking them to view the contents, to me if you have a number of RAR files a quick preview would be very helpful indeed...
I get quite a few RAR files over the course of the month, and for me it would be very handy for sorting purposes if nothing else to see what is inside in a preview without having to go inside...

I just get a hex view if I show a zip file in the preview pane. Are you viewing them via the MultiView plugin or something?[/quote]
Hey nudel,
Yes, I have the MultiView plugin installed... I don't know if that is what lets me preview the ZIP files or not but, it is very handy to be able to and, would be a nice feature for RAR files as well if it were available...
Do you know that you can set up a mouse button action, or a toolbar/hotkey, which opens the selected RAR file (or zip, or normal folder) in the other side of a dual display? I find that works well for browsing inside of archives without losing the directory the archive is in. You can make it open a new tab on the other side so you don't lose the folder you were in there, too, if you want.

I guess QuickView doesn't support RAR.

thanks for that Nudel, I did know that... I just think it would be handy to be able to just use QuickView to see the contents passively...
