I use IrfanView as my image viewer but can't seem to replace D8viewer with it.I've tried Right click open with and select IrfanView as my default image viewer but it doesn't work.
Try turning off Preferences / File Operations / Double-click on Files / Use internal picture viewer for.
Thank you I've done that but my image files still open with the d8viewer instead of IrfanView
Is this only within Opus, or within Explorer and the desktop as well?
Both.No matter what I seem to do I can only open one image with IrfanView and then it reverts back d8viewer or in some cases Windows Viewer
Is this always with the same type of file?
It would be very strange if the same action, on the same file type, in the same program, and running under the same account (and same UAC elevation level) sometimes opened one viewer and sometimes opened another. If results are different for different file types then that would make more sense.
Please run FileTypeDiag on the file type(s) you're seeing the problem with, and zip & attach the results. That should reveal where the problem is in the registry, and we should then be able to tell you how to fix it.
jpg.rar (17.4 KB)99% of my image files are jpg so that's the only extension I''m interested in.I've enclosed the file you requested
Does IrfanView have any options of its own to make itself the default viewer? Maybe it thinks it's not meant to be the default and is resetting the file associations when it runs.
If Jon's reply above doesn't help, here are some more thoughts:
Nothing in the registry log seems like d8viewer.exe should be used. The only place where it's mentioned is as one of the Open With choices, but it doesn't seem to be marked as the default choice.
Changing this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.jpg: "Progid" is REG_SZ: "jpegfile"
to IrfanView.jpg instead of jpegfile may fix things. But please change it back again if it doesn't help.
If you're not comfortable using regedit to make the change, shout and we can make some .reg files for you which will do it.
Focus on getting things right in Explorer first, then worry about Opus, since Opus adds some extra complexity on top which may confuse things if you try to solve both at once.
I can set IrfanView options to open all image files but when I open an image file Windows Viewer or d8viewer opens it.Then when I go and have a look at the IrfanView file settings all the image boxes have been unchecked maybe it's a problem with windows 8.This is what I have in the registry where you pointed me too.
It's definitely a Windows issue rather than an Opus one if it's affecting Explorer and opening the Windows viewer sometimes.
The registry screenshot is slightly the wrong place. You want to go up one level to the .jpg key/folder in the tree, and then there should be a ProgId value on the right. Try double-clicking the ProgId value and changing it to IrfanView.jpg
Sorry about the screenshot here's the correct one,I hope.It already has a entry in there referring to IrfanView so I'm not sure what to do about it.Thanks for your help.
You're still in the wrong place. Go up a level to .jpg and do not go into the OpenWithProgIds level, which was never mentioned.
I'm getting confused with this registry entry stuff I don't want to mess with it as I'm not competent to play with it.Just another thing you say the d8viewer isn't marked as default program this is what I see when I click on the properties of a jpg file.No matter what I do I can't change the type of file to open jpg files to anything else it always stays with d8viewer.
This has to be a Windows problem.I uninstalled Directory Opus and although it removed d8viewer from the default jpg file opener it still doesn't retain any image viewer settings I try and make default. Thanks for your help ,looks like I'm stuck with with what I've got.
I found this thread which suggests it's a problem with IrfanView under Windows 8. You probably need to contact their tech support for assistance.
This happens with any graphics software I try not just IrfanView.
I contacted IrfanView and they solved the problem with the answer below.
'right mouse click on IrfanView, a menu shows, use "Start as admin".
Start IrfanView and now you change the extensions ins: Properties->Extensions'
I'm set up as the Administrator on my PC so didn't think of looking in that direction.
Thanks for everyone's input it was much appreciated.
When I started my PC this Morning IrfanView was no longer my default viewer. I tried running as Administrator but it doesn't work anymore.Looks like a Windows 8.1 problem changing settings without permission.I give up I'll just open IrfanView and then the image file in that order.
