Is there a command (Raw or Predefined) that will save the current folder format (for the current folder only) without opening the Folder Options dialog?
I'd like to create a toolbar button that saves the current format for the current folder so that I can do this in one click and without having to see the Folder Options dialog.
I can easily create a button that opens the dialog (Properties FOLDEROPTIONS) but I couldn't find a way to do it without opening the dialog.
There is no way to do this that I know of. However many of the folder format functions overlap with styles, and you can update a style simply by making your changes then right clicking over the appropriate style on the style tab bar and choosing Update.
That's not really what you're asking for I know, but it's the closest I can come to answering your question.
I like the Styles tab bar hidden, so I'll stick with the Folder Options dialog for now.
Part of my problem with the dialog is that the feedback to the user is lacking.
When I make a change to a lister and then open the Folder Options dialog, the "Apply" button is grayed out. That's OK, I think, because I haven't commanded a Save operation. But if I click on the "Save the current folder format" control and choose Save>For this Folder, or Save>For This Folder and All Subfolders, the Apply button still stays grayed out.
So I click OK, but I'm never quite sure if the change has "stuck" until I move to a different folder and then back again.
The Apply button applies the settings in the dialog to the lister that opened the dialog.
When you open the dialog it's using whatever settings the lister is using and thus there is nothing to apply.
I can see that logic.
But I also would like some feedback when I click the Save control, if the Save operation is Cancel-able (is that a word? ).
If I can back out of the Save operation by clicking the dialog's Cancel button, then I need more feedback that the Save operation is pending before I decide to click OK or Cancel.
If I can't back out of the Save operation by clicking Cancel, then the point is moot and feedback is irrelevant.
The Save and Clear buttons/menus affect Preferences and take effect as soon as you use them.
The OK and Apply buttons affect just the temporary file display.
So you could update Preferences without changing the current window, or vice versa.
At least, that's how I think it works from memory. It's easy enough to try out if you want to test/confirm it. Just (re-)open Preferences and see if the Folder Format list has changed after using the Save button, then click Cancel and see if the lister is still using its old format.
