Copying file to win11 pc and get "resource not available" or "a device does not exist"

I was copying a huge file of documents of varying types from an external hard drive (documents from my win10pc) to a win11 pc. During the copying using Opus 13 I received frequent warnings and the copying would stop and require me to Retry, Skip, or Abort. The warnings were of the type "specified resource not longer available," or "a device which does not exist was specified" or similar. If I hit retry the file apparently copied. I checked after all the copying was done and the ones I checked appeared to be there. There was no option to hit Retry All.

The files varied from Word.docs, to Word.docxs to pdfs, to pngs, to ppts to sound files. I checked a few of the pdfs and the copied files, after I had hit retry to make them go thru, seemed ok.

Is this a bug, or a feature I can change in Opus, or something I need to worry about?

Those messages come from Windows, not Opus, and you'll probably see the same thing in File Explorer.

If it's intermittent, and no network is involved, it usually means there's something wrong with the hardware, either the drive itself, the cabling or connectors at one of the ends, or a power supply issue.

Since it's an external hard drive, try plugging it directly into the PC rather than using a USB hub. (If the hub is unpowered, that's also a likely cause, but avoiding hubs is good in general if you're seeing problems.) It may also be worth trying different USB ports, as some are shared with other devices.

Thank you for the quick reply (as usual). The bad news is that it was a Western Digital drive that I have not had problems with on my older win10 machine. It was plug directly into a new win11 machine. I can try its other USB port next time, or wiggle the cable, of see if I have that trouble copying them back to my win10 machine.

Is this a win11 "feature" and not something that happened in win10? Other than the nuisance, they did appear to copy ok once I hit retry.

Thought you might be interested in more troubleshooting info. When copying large amount of files from one of my WD 1.5GB Passports to the PC using its left-side USB, I get periodic failures on random files when trying to copy them saying "Error, a device that does not exist was specified." If I say retry it copies ok. Using a different WD drive does not produce the problem and using the right-side USB on the PC with the 1.5GB drive is also OK, and copying to my prior PC works fine. I also tried switching the cables between the WD that gave a problem and the one that didn't, and it had no effect.

Seems to be an interaction with that one WD and the left USB. Curious.

Thank you again.

Just wanted to give another update and confirm one of Leo's suggestions that the problems discussed above, are at least in part hardware related. This weekend, after I got nailed with the Win11 24H2 update that I had been avoiding as long as possible, I started having troubles copying from various USB drives to my PC or between them. I was working with two DTEG2 32GB drives formatted in NTFS (perhaps a bad choice) and a no-name 32 GB drive. The drives kept dropping and in copying I was getting the error message mentioned above relating to "a device which does not exists was specified."

Having reread your messages I decided to purchase two new well-rated Samsung USBs that were priced very well on Amazon. One is a MUF-128AB USB 3.1 128 GB, and the other a MUF64Dak USB-C 64 GB. The 128 is formatted exFAT and the 64 came formatted FAT. Both are working great and for now (fingers crossed) I have no problems at all. Smooth sailing. Thanx again.
