Deleted original folder; cannot delete new folder under GP Software, and cannot uninstall. Same error Runtime 51.37, could not call proc
clicked directly on unins000.exe inside Dopus folder. Same error
(Please try to consolidate your posts so the thread is easier to read.)
dopus.exe and dopusrt.exe are the two executables that may be running.
Other programs may lock some of the Opus DLLs, though.
If neither executable is running but you still can't delete the folder, try renaming the folder, then reboot. You should then be able to delete the folder after the reboot.
It may be worth disabling your antivirus when trying the installer after that, in case it is stopping the new exe/dll files being written to disk because they are new and it doesn't recognise them yet.
I looked for consolidation but have no idea how to do that. I don't mind doing that, but HOW?
RENAMING, UNINSTALLING, all failing. Now What? Am stuck with non-functional version of DOpus
This cannot be renamed or deleted: GPSoftware, GPSoftware/DOPUS, GPSoftware/DOPUS/ the following are the only files left: dopus.exe, dopusrt.exe, dowshlp.exe and unins000.exe. Tried everything. Will explore consolidating posts.
Have you tried rebooting (again) and then seeing if you can rename or delete the folder or files?
If you still can't, check in Task Manager for either process, but if the DLLs are no longer there as you say then they should both fail to launch after a reboot.
If the files are still locked at that point, something external to Opus is locking them, as Opus itself could not even run without the accompanying DLLs being there.
Finally deleted everything, rebooted. When I re-installed, the latest version (I don't see that this version is 64-bit specific - maybe that's the problem), there was no option as to where to install it, and I didn't want to install it into that temporary folder I had created earlier. Lo & behold it remembered that folder GPSoftware/DOpus. (or is that the correct location??). When I tried to run multiple instances it failed. I could not uninstall it, and went through the whole routine again, partial deletions, then rebooting, etc. So now: 1. No Dopus on computer 2. Hesitant about installing because it, somehow, won't function properly, saying something about dopusrt.exe... hmm.. (Did a search for consolidation of posts but didn't see anything about it.)
By "consolidation of posts", Leo just means stop posting lots of little thought bubbles - save them up and post them all at once
I really think you need to stop uninstalling and reinstalling the program all the time, as I suspect that is where you are getting into trouble. If you have things that seem to not work (e.g. "When I tried to run multiple instances it failed") don't immediately try to uninstall - describe the problem to us and let us see if we can help you resolve it.
If you can get your machine into a consistent state where you have the program completely removed (uninstalled, and all GPSoftware/Opus folders deleted), please:
- Download the most recent installer
- Reboot
- Install the program
- Run the program
- Don't do any more uninstalls/reinstalls unless we advise it
Will do exactly as you state. (This post itself is very short {to be avoided in the future}). Will report back. Thank you greatly.
Interesting: I wonder if something is wrong with the machine. I downloaded the most recent installer. DOpusInstall.exe. In the same folder there is a file named DOpusInstall-12.20.exe which is what I had downloaded last week and installed from. That's when the problems started. I may have renamed it, perhaps to distinguish it from previous versions that I have, but hadn't installed. Cannot deleted it; says I do not have the permission to do so. Same story: cannot renamed. I tried to do a file compare (with BeyondCompare) and that program said it could not open the file. Is this a corrupted file, or is the system infected? I ran a virus scan on all drives and nothing shows up as malicious. I am the administrator. I did try deleting other files, and no problems were detected.
Also (forgive this rather short fragment), a program I have indicates that the file is "occupied by the below processes: Name: System; Path: System; Pid: 4" No other information. Maybe I could run System Processes (if that's what is it called) to get a more comprehensive report). From Amiga days I know about paths, but I would have to google "pid". What is holding the file hostage is not specified with this utility (IObit Unlocker v1.1), which BTW helped earlier me delete unwanted files. OH, I just want to use Opus. Why is this happening? This is the computer version of Verona Kirus. UGH.
Am doing research, but not much success: I did try to delete it, and instead the recently downloaded version of Opus was deleted. Was it linked? How can you select one file and have another with a slightly different name be deleted? That's why I don't want to install anything until I can delete this file. I will (eventually) have to re-download the installer. In the process manager, the lowest PID is 668. Also, the icon for both installers were different.
Just a very quick note. I called the technical support team for my computer and we verified that file operations on the machine are working normally. It's just this particular .exe which cannot be deleted.
Have you tried doing what either Jon or I asked, exactly as we said?
There's a lot of information in your replies about trying random things in your replies but I don't see anything clear about about exactly what happened when you tried what either of us suggested.
As an aside, if System has a lock on the file then it usually means it's either being accessed by another machine remotely (e.g. if you have shared the folder with other machines on your network) or it's antivirus locking it.
(We've also seen a bug in Windows 10 where if a Windows Store application triggers a file to be read, it stays locked forever until the machine is rebooted, but that's more likely with DLL and config files, not EXE files.)
Dear Leo and Jon,
I did my best to follow your instructions EXACTLY, and lo and behold, when rebooting, the pesky file was gone. I installed Dopus and aside from initial surprises, it seems to be working perfectly.
The initial problems were: (1) launch Customize from toolbar created "unspecified error: dopusrt.exe"; (2) launch Preferences from toolbar, same behavior. (3) the toolbar icon looked nothing like the beautiful yellow one; instead it was a white drab rectangle with some little dots in it.
BUT, after launching another lister (from the toolbar) and then selecting, alternately, "customize" and "preferences" from the lister menu -- returning to the toolbar and selecting those very functions did work like a charm. Of course, I don't understand why these error messages came up at first. A little later, when I returned to the computer, the glorious image in the rectangle reappeared - just like old times!
The bottom line is that NOW, the program is working beautifully!!
Unless something else malfunctions, which I seriously doubt (this program has always been rock-solid), this should be considered to be "case closed" as regards my earlier-stated concerns.
That is, unless you want me to test other things or want me to change some settings.
Deepest thanks,
Michael
Glad it's working. Even if someone else does malfunction, please don't uninstall it without asking us first
Will do. Thank you, once again. Fantastic program (I've been bowled over by it since the Amiga days).
