not getting any error message about a conflict but the keystroke combo doesn't color the selected file. I can color it manually.
ctrl shift l (lower case L)
other key combos did generate conflict error message
And then tried but couldn't figure out how to create a button to do the same.

still nogo. (and i couldn't consistently get to the "new button" menu without factory resetting my toolbar)
I was hoping the color was not visible in my two column view off to the right, but don't see it even in single column
What goes wrong?
It's always there, as long as you're editing the toolbars (i.e. in Customize mode).
Note that if you right-click an existing item, the menu for inserting something new next to it is called Insert New, but if you right-click the empty space at the end of a toolbar, the menu is called New. There's always a New Button option below that menu.
