to have background in colomn name, you can enable "Blend file background colors with background image" in Preferences/Display - Options
or you can disable color of "current sort field" in Preferences/Display - Fields
i don't understand the other question 
The blending option probably won't have any affect in the Desktop virtual folder though, since it's drawn by Explorer. If you go to /desktopdir instead then it will work, though, and that dir is generally preferable to the virtual Desktop for a bunch of other reasons.
