I can't get DOpus to respect my default PDF application setting. After installing XODO PDF Reader, DOpus would still open in Adobe Reader.
After I uninstalled Adobe reader, DOpus used the viewer pane. I tried unchecking PDF from the viewer plugin settings, then it just opened the viewer with an error text.
I tried using the File Types dialog to create an entry for .pdf and set open to my application, but that didn't work either. The file type entry does not appear to be saved properly. It is not there the next time I open the dialog. (It did present a UAC prompt when I created the entry, but I authenticated that.)
So how do I get DOpus to open PDFs in my preferred application?
It is correctly set in Windows (Windows Explorer opens the right program.)
It sounds like there isn't a PDF type in the registry.
Try right-clicking a pdf file, then Open With > Choose Default Program and select the tool you want. That will often correct things.
Reinstalling the PDF viewer is also worth a try, especially if another PDF viewer has been installed or uninstalled, since one might remove the other's registry settings related to the file type.
Thank you for the very quick response. Open With > Choose Default Program is the very first thing I tried. I also verified in Windows Settings that XODO is set as default for PDF. I didn't also explicitly check the registry, but I'm sure it's there if it's in the Windows Settings.
I tried reinstalling XODO, but DOpus still opens the viewer. How do I disable the viewer for PDFs? I tried File > Plugin > Configure... in the viewer and unchecked Microsoft PDF. Now it still opens the viewer with a message that "This PDF document could not be displayed ...".
I just want it to use the Windows-level default, not the internal viewer.
When I double-click a PDF file in DOpus. I expect it to open the default application. It used to open Adobe Reader (before I uninstalled it). Now it opens the viewer (in a separate window, not a pane in the lister).
Update: I tried disabling the MetaPlugin (Preview/Office/Web/ActiveX) plugin under Preferences > Viewer > Plugins.
Now when I double-click a PDF, it acts like I clicked Open With > Default Program. In other words, a Windows dialog appears with a list of applications. XODO is listed as default, and I can click "Always" or "Just once". Then it opens the file in XODO.
However: This happens every time I double-click a PDF. It won't just open the default.
There is no entry for PDF in Settings > File Types.
The only thing the search box finds is a system protocol (URL:xodopdfreader.weblauncher protocol).
When I try to create an entry for PDFs and enter .pdf as extension for a new file type, an error pops up saying "The file extension 'pdf' is already defined for the file type '<unknown.'"
I click "Use Extension" and enter the application path under Commands > Actions > open. A UAC prompt appears, which i authenticate. Then I can see the new PDF Document entry under System File types. Oddly, it says in the bottom info pane "Opens with: Microsoft Edge".
But after I close the pane, the behavior of DOpus has not changed. And when I open the File Types dialog again, the PDF entry I created is no longer there.
Opus would not normally open its viewer for double-click on anything other than image files, and it shouldn't identify PDF as an image file by default.
