I first downloaded an evaluation version of Directory Opus on May 2, 2002 .
It was version 6.1.0, but my archive has that version time stamped at March 6 2002 along with some mp3 plugin. No, I haven't extracted this to find out more.
My purchase is dated June 2, 2002 with a dual license .
It cost $115 AUD at the time.
The receipt included a note from Greg Perry.
"Thankyou for purchasing Directory Opus 6!
We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy using the software as much as we enjoyed writing it! "
Registration details then followed.
It became the best software purchase decision I have ever made.
I'll skip the old bad Australia software purchases like Mediaware.
Cool Bananas was better.
So here we are two years after Directory Opus 13's first stable release.
There have been 133 beta releases and 19 stable releases since then unless I miscounted them .
Notice that Windows is still at version 11 (version 1 in 1985 before Opus), and JPEG has just arrived at version 10 (version 1 about the same time as Opus).
Visual Studio is ahead at version 18, four years after its predecessor (2022-2026).
People in the Apple Mac universe commonly believe that they are moving too fast with the one year cycle of major versions (now aligned with the calendar year) and wish more focus on stability and quality with a slower cycle.
RAD Studio, Delphi, and C++Builder are also at version 13, and this is also the lucky number of prominent people.
