DO AutoPlay option not on one Win10 PC

When plugging in a thunb drive or SD card into my laptop I get a prompt from W-10 asking me what to do to handle the device.

DO "used" to be one of the options to select. Recently I've noted that DO does not appear in the options list of APPs to choose from to handle the files on the SD card or the thumb drive.

I've looked and looked, but can't find the magic button/toggle to let DO become one of the choices for handling such. I've also tried different options in the DO preferances as well.

Tnx in advance.

Cheers,
Nolan K.

Assuming Opus Pro, is Explorer Replacement turned on and working OK?

e.g. Try creating a folder on the Windows desktop, then double-click it to see which program opens in response.

Leo,

Created folder on desktop, clicked on same and it opened with DO.

Just tried again by inserting another thumb drive, got prompted by Windows for what to do and DO was not in the option list to choose.

BTW - I have the most recent update of W-10 v1803.

I've been running into a few things that work quite strange with this most recent update. Sigh!! :roll_eyes:

FWIW, I'm also on Windows 10 1803 and still see this, if I turn autoplay back on:

I see this under Settings:

I don't think I've done anything extra to get to here, since I don't usually use autoplay and had it turned off entirely until now.

One thing to try, in case the registry settings have been damaged:

  • Go to Preferences / Launching Opus / Explorer Replacement
  • Select "Don't replace Explorer"
  • Click OK
  • Wait 10 seconds
  • Go back to Preferences and select "Replace Explorer for all file system folders (recommended)"
  • Click OK and wait 10 seconds again, then try again (or maybe reboot; I don't know if the shell caches some of the registry settings involved with autoplay).

Made all adjustments and with longer than 10-sec wait times. Also did a reboot of the laptop to make sure and still DO does not show up as a choice from the autoplay prompt.

Try re-running the installer over the top of the existing installation. (Don't uninstall first; that would wipe your config and isn't needed.)

Re-running the installer should repair some more registry settings which something (maybe the Windows update) must have removed.

No joy with the re-installation either.

I'll keep digging. This Windows 10 v1803 is also doing some other weird things in that it won't run "some" EXE files from the RUN button under the Start Key. I have to run them from the DO file manager and they work fine, but since the 1803 update on 05/01/18 that hiccup happened.

There is an APP I use for inspection reports and it generates an e-mail and utilizes MAPI to reach out to the 'default' e-mail client. I have both Outlook and Thunderbird on my laptop and it will NEVER select Thunderbird.

So ... I've given thought to yet again scrubbing my SSD and reloading the OS and start over, but that is a 2-3 day effort to get all the blame APPs reloaded and running again.

Sigh !!! :slight_smile:

Do you have this under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\OpusOpenFolder?

Leo,
Nope that key was not in place. I tried to read what you had posted and entered it into the registry, rebooted, but still didn't work out.
I may have mis-keyed something as well.

That key should be re-created by the installer.

Are you installing the latest version, downloaded directly from our website? Or an older or different installer?

It's also possible antivirus or something is blocking part of the installation.

I did a fresh download from your site and re-installed, but it did not create the key.

I'm finding more and more things wrong with this W-10 update and I'm going to scrub the SSD and load a "new" and "clean" W-10. Rather than going the update route I decided to spend the $$ and bought a copy to have fresh for my use.

I actually bought two as I'm having to rebuild my wife's laptop that died this past Sunday. I got her a new/used/refurbished Dell Latitude E6420. It had W-7 Pro loaded and I have a new SSD (Crucial) that I've put in this (new to us) Latitude and am installing W-10 Pro on it now.

Once I get her machine back up I'll tackle mine and hopefully get a good installation there as well.

I'm not much in favor up the update process in light of my recent experience.

I'll keep you posted as I make headway.

I usually prefer a clean install of Windows as well.

A problem now is these every-six-months Windows updates change, reset and break a lot more than service packs used to, but don't seem to get proper QA, and carry the same risks as an in-place upgrade from, say, Vista to Win7 used to, but much more frequent, and for much less in return. :frowning:

Hopefully Microsoft will correct course. Quality is not great lately.

Leo,

Backed up my data, scrubbed the SSD and did an installation of W-10 Pro and all updates. I purchased a new key for w-10 Pro from my local Best Buy.

I'm still having the same problems. Autoplay will not show DO as an option.

I also verified that the key you noted for the registry is NOT in place.

Can you send me a file with that key so I can copy/paste in place as I'm thinking I mis-keyed my attempt the other night.

So ... I'm still scratching my head.

Here's a registry file that should recreate the needed key:

OpusOpenFolder.zip (459 Bytes)

The contents look like this:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\EventHandlers\UnknownContentOnArrival]
"OpusOpenFolder"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\OpusOpenFolder]
"Action"="@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,-17410"
"DefaultIcon"="\"C:\\Program Files\\GPSoftware\\Directory Opus\\dopusrt.exe\",0"
"InvokeProgID"="Folder"
"InvokeVerb"="openindopus"
"Provider"="Directory Opus"

Leo,

Tnx much. That got me down the right path. I changed a couple things in the "DefaultIcon" string to allow the DO icon to appear rather than a blue box.

Once the data (Key & String) were entered I got success.

Interesting observation here is that I've done a fresh installation of W-10 Pro (new keys) and the one laptop would not write any DO changes to the registry to allow it operate as part of AutoPlay. The other laptop I did (for my wife) had everything written to the registry without any issue.

I checked my laptop that I use for my ham radio efforts and it only had the DO string under: "UnknownContentOnArrival".
So I added the "OpenOpusFolder" key and data and it all came to life.

Certainly can't figure out the hiccups with the installations save that they are on two different model Dell Laptops. Not brand new, but they are all the Latitude series of different models. All have new SSDs that I've installed as well with additional memory added to all three units.

I've attached JPG screenshots of my registry and autoplay settings/choices.

Thanks so much for you help and patience.

Whatever is blocking those registry settings may be blocking others on the same machine. Something to keep in mind if anything else doesn't work, in Opus or in other software.
