DO11 - Slow opening big subdirectories

I've started using a lot of ZIP files lately, and DOpus (DO10 and I recently upgraded to DO11) has been wonderful for managing/creating/viewing them.

I recently went to Preferences -> Folder Tree -> Contents -> .....
And under the heading "Show in folder", I selected the option: [X] Zip files and other archives.

After I selected that option, I'm noticing a big delay when I open directories that have many subdirectories.

EXAMPLE: I have a main directory for GOG (GoodOldGames.com), which has many subdirectories, 1 for each different game. When I open the GOG directory for the first time since running DOpus, I notice a 4-6 secord delay to open the directory.

If I un-select [ ] Zip files and other archives, there is no delay and everything runs very fast & smooth.

QUESTION: I really like seeing the ZIP files in the Folder Tree, is there anything I can do to reduce the delay when opening directories? Or maybe is there a custom menu-bar button I can make to toggle the Preference setting?

Thank you in advance for your help, and for the wonderful DOpus program,
LarryL

It could be your antivirus scanner scanning all the zips and exes as Opus checks them. Opus may open them and read a small amount of data, which should not take long normally but can do it the antivirus scanner decides it wants to check the whole file.

Many scanners cache the result and won't need to re-scan the files unless they change, but possibly not all.

This can happen with .exe files as well as .zip files, and especially large .exe installers that can take a long time to virus scan. (Since exe files can be self-extracting zips, which can appear in the folder tree if the zip option is on.)

Leo, thank you very much for the speedy help!

With your suggestion to check my AV, I found the problem and figured out a solution too. Everything is running fast & smooth now, even with the option selected "Preferences->FolderTree->Contents-> [X] Zip files and other archives".

Here's what I did ....

I disabled the 2 anti-virus programs I run, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) -and- Panda Free AV. I then tried opening one of the big directories, and it opened FAST.

I re-enabled Panda, and it was still FAST.

I then re-enabled MSE and everything was SLOW again. Ahha!
In MSE I turned OFF the advanced setting "Scan archive files", but it still was SLOW.
In MSE I disabled the main "Real Time Protection" option, and everything was FAST. Ahha again!

I turned back on the MSE real time protection, and tried out some of the other MSE options ....
I used the MSE option "Exclude File Types" to exclude ZIP files, and everything was SLOW.
I used the MSE option "Exclude File Types" to exclude EXE files, and everything was FAST.

Since I want my AV to scan EXE's, I then tried the MSE option "Exclude Processes", and selected the dopus.exe .... and holy smokes everything is running SUPER FAST now.

Thank you again for the suggestion to check my AV!
And thank you for making such a wonderful and helpful DOpus program too!

Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty terrible these days, sadly.
