That method can works well if you run apps; I usually run documents that are associated with the appropriate app and it is very hard to remember the name of thousands of documents.
It is amazing how we all have different ways to achieve essentially same results; that goes to say a lot about the power of Windows. That is one of the reason I completely gave up on Linux as things that are so simple to do in Windows I found very hard (or impossible) to do in Linux.
