Dopus zip not compatible with pkzip 12.1

I know it must be difficult to keep up with zip formats but we are getting a number of government files that are created with new versions of Winzip and pkzip. Dopus doesn't work with them. Will anything be done in the near future?

Do you mean .zipx files?

I'm keeping my eyes on this one, leo. I mentioned the zipx format a while ago in a different thread and I suspected you'll be getting more complaints about this issue.

If it is about the zipx format...then yeah, looks like DOpus will have to give support to this format at some point.

Also, for clarification...I think you guys should post an FAQ for people to read on the zip format...especially the new ones coming out. This could be a growing problem because if people update to newer versions of Winzip, Winrar or even the sophisticated Power Archiver software they may experience software conflicts or even crashes especially if they're legally licensed DO users.

No-one ever reads them anyway :unamused:

Winzip doesn't output zipx by default and from what I've seen makes it clear that enabling zipx will create archives that are not compatible with most other programs... I'll be surprised if it becomes commonly used. (But there will always be people who turn things on without thinking.)

From looking into it a bit further, it appears to me that parts of zipx are un(der)-documented and/or patented, too. Perhaps I've misunderstood, though; I've only had a brief look into this so far.

If 7-zip gains zipx support then Opus will get it too (once I finish the 7-zip plugin for Opus). It isn't clear if that will happen, though: See this discussion.

In the mean time, I would complain to anyone who sends you a zipx archive. Especially a government department who should be using formats with maximum interoperability. Chances are they didn't realise the implications of turning on the zipx option and will turn it off if someone points out to them the problems it causes.

Hi Leo,

I don't mean zipx, just zip. People from the government send me zip files that are are password protected. I can't open them with DO, but I can open them with either PKware or Winzip. I would expect the latest versions of the 2 major players to be supported.

Can you provide an example file?
