In Settings/Preferences/Double-click. I check the box ‘Open a New Lister’ and ‘Apply’ ; but when I next start my PC the double-click on the desktop does not work.
I am running WinXP Pro SP2.
Any suggestions, please.

Try turning the option off, OKing the Prefs dialog, then opening Prefs again and turning the option on again and OKing the dialog again. This sometimes repairs a registry setting and makes it work.
Double-click on the desktop doesn't work unless Opus is running, so you'll need to make sure you have Opus set to run automatically on startup.
