I'm having an intermittent problem in Opus 12.3 build 6183 where I try to drag and drop files into an external application and I can't.
When I first go into a folder (located on my qnap NAS drive) things work fine.
Then, very frequently, i cannot "pick up" a file to drag to another application. The pickup simply doesn't work. I can move and copy files fine with the buttons but dragging and dropping will not work -- even between directories. Often there is a little circle pulsating next to the tabs on the far right of the browser.
This even happens when there is no activity happening on the drive.
Drag & drop not working usually means something on the system has not released a shared object involved with drag & drop, so a new operation cannot begin yet.
It can also happen if the file you're trying to drag is inaccessible (e.g. completely locked with no read/write sharing by another program, or virus scanner, etc).
Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to track down the cause, at least that I know of, so it takes some experimentation.
This spinning circle could be involved if something like video files are affected and the circle is there because they are being scanned and a video splitter/codec has gotten stuck and is holding exclusive locks on the files, as an example. Hovering over the spinner should give a bit more information about why it is there, and closing the window should cancel whatever it was doing (if it can be cancelled).
Thank you Leo. I will pay close attention by hovering over the spinner. Not sure why in some directories it's either happening but then i move to another directory and it's not.
I've tried ensuring any app that could possibly be locking the files are closed.
Do you use Messenger by any chance? I saw something similar recently, and it seemed to coincide with when the Messenger app was open, but I am not entirely sure. (I was already slightly weary of it w.r.t. drag & drop as it does some odd things if you drag a file over it on the way to another program. That may be unrelated, of course.)
I wasn't able to pin it down myself, and haven't had it happen for a few days, but it was happening a lot a couple of days ago, I think until I rebooted. So far that was the first and only time I've seen it, but you're not alone at least.
I only started using Messenger recently, so I wonder if it's involved, or just a red herring. (It could also involve other 'metro' apps that handle drag & drop, if it's due to a common library or API, I guess. Drag & drop between Win32 and the 'metro' APIs is more complex than normal and thus could have more points of failure. But it's completely possible it's unrelated to Messenger and I'm just being suspicious of it due to other oddities that don't mean it's involved in this for sure.)
I don't have messenger. I'll be aware as I troubleshoot what apps I have open that are sensitive to drag and drop.
Right now I'm trying to see if I can find a utility on my QNAP NAS that can give me some insight into locked files. Since it's not a windows server my typical toolbag is not at my disposal.
I can't really see what's happening. I do notice a slight flickering every one second or so.
I'm also going to use windows explorer as a test as well to see if the problem persists there too. I'll report back.
Try left and right dragging as well. For me the problem was usually (maybe always; not sure) confined to dragging with the right mouse button. Would be interesting to know if the same is true there, or even the reverse.
Right dragging seems to help a little. Usually I can get it to work by left or right dragging. Not always though. Windows File manager does not seem to exibit this behaviour. Still poking around trying to isolate. Welcome any other ideas.
For what it's worth, I have not seen the problem again here since the first time. It seemed to only happen for a couple of days (or a couple of reboots, possibly).
Hi Leo,
I've seen that this issue was solved a while ago, but I'm having now the same problem... Cannot dran and drop files between the 2 windows I have opened. I just downloaded the new version of the application, but the problem was present before that.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
