Dragging Files to Online Zip Tools Fails Randomly with Directory Opus – Any Idea Why?

I’m having a strange issue when I try to drag files directly from Directory Opus into a browser-based ZIP tool. The tool is supposed to compress the dropped files and give back a zip download. But when I drag from Directory Opus, it either doesn’t respond at all or acts like something is uploading but never finishes. The same tool works perfectly when I drag the exact same files using Windows Explorer or another basic file manager.

This is not an issue with the ZIP tool itself — it’s a web tool that doesn't require installation, and it normally works well. What I’m trying to understand is how Directory Opus handles file drag and drop when used outside of its environment, especially when dropping onto web pages.

The ZIP tool I’m using is quite straightforward. You drag your files into the drop area in the browser, and it instantly turns the files into zip archives and gives you a download link. I was inspired by this idea positively because it saves time and lets me avoid extra software. It works well with all major browsers and handles different file types easily. The problem only shows up when dragging from Directory Opus.

I’ve tried dragging single files and multiple files, and I’ve tested it across different file types like PDFs, DOCX, and JPGs. I also tried different browsers like Chrome and Firefox. None of that changes the result — Directory Opus just doesn’t seem to interact with the site correctly, while other file managers do.

Is there something in Directory Opus settings that affects how it passes file data in a drag-and-drop action? Does it use a different method than Explorer, like some special data object or format that a web page can’t read properly? I checked Preferences but didn’t find anything obvious.

I’ve looked for context menu actions or drag options that might influence this, but I’m still not sure what to change. It feels like the file isn't being recognized as a normal drop target by the browser. Does anyone know if Directory Opus treats drag actions differently when the target is a web page instead of another window?

If anyone here has experience with this kind of problem or knows what configuration might affect it, I’d really appreciate your help. This has been confusing me for days.

Drag & drop is handled by the program that you drop the files on. If they're normal files that have real paths (not something "virtual", like a file inside an archive that has to be streamed as data) then the involvement of the program that drops the files on the other program ends once the operation starts.

So, once the list of files has reached the web browser, Opus is no longer in the picture. If the browser starts the operation but then fails, it's likely something outside of Opus causing the problem.

(On the other hand, if the operation doesn't even begin and the web browser never reacts or gets the list of files to upload, then Opus could be involved in that problem.)

Based on the other details, my guess is antivirus is blocking the operation sometimes. It may be reacting to some combination of file types, location, file content, and which applications are involved in the action, which could explain why you don't always get the same results.

(That or it's failing randomly and only appeared to always work when dropping from other things due to luck.)
