Dropbox cloud files slow to open in internal viewers when ESET real-time protection is enabled

Hi,

This may be something Directory Opus has no control over but I wanted to post here for visibility.

I’m having an issue with Dropbox cloud files opening very slowly from Directory Opus when ESET real-time file system protection is enabled. The delay is around 15–20 seconds, even for small TXT files or camera uploads. The same files open normally from Windows Explorer.

After more testing, I found that the lag only happens when I use the Directory Opus internal viewers for image and text files. If I set Directory Opus to open the same files with external applications instead, there’s no delay.

I reported this to ESET as well. They reviewed the logs/dump and mentioned a conflict/deadlock between Directory Opus and Dropbox involving the main stream and setting EndOfFile on the related ADS. They also said a future ESET change may help.

ESET forum thread is here:

There is a conflict (deadlock) between Directory Opus and Dropbox upon opening the main stream and setting EndOfFile on the related ADS.

I’m not sure what that means, without more details. Viewing a file doesn’t modify its ADS, and AFAIK Dropbox doesn’t sync ADS into the cloud (except some attributes for its own usage).

If the same thing works without the security tool in the mix, that suggests the security tool is where the problem is.
