Ebook files showing as 8.3 format in new drive

My main eBook folders are on an external HDD show as .epub in DOPUS. If I double-click the file to open it in Calibre, the file is seen as .EPU by Calibre. I can right-click the same file and open with the main Calibre program fine.
If I move the same file to a desktop folder and double-click to launch, it works as it should and opens in Calibre.
The properties of the same file in each location show different information, shown below

I have not found any instructions in the forum to lead me to a solution.

How long are the paths in total?

Does the same thing happen in File Explorer?

paths are like this:
O:\ Mobilism - Sort\ Downloaded but not worked 5-20-2023 on\Republican Party Reptile; The Confessions, Adventures, Essays and (Other) Outrages of P J O'Rourke (epub) Humor

C:\Users\Robert Long\Desktop\Uploads\Republican Party Reptile The Confessions, Adventures, Essays and (Other) Outrages of P J O'Rourke By P.J. O’Rourke (epub) Humor .epub

Yes, double-clicking the top file location in File Explorer also tries to open the file in Calibre as .EPU, not .epub

Those paths are less than 255 characters, so I am not sure why they are being turned into short versions, but it’s not Opus doing it.

If the same thing happens in File Explorer then it’s something Calibre is doing, or how the filetype in the registry is set up (presumably by Calibre as well).

OK, thank you Leo. process of elimination. I will continue to look further for the culprit. When I discover the reason, I will update here.
